St. Louis, Mo., April 3, 2019 – The No. 18-ranked Washington University in St. Louis baseball team closed out an 11-0 nonconference win over MacMurray College to secure its 16th win of the season and tally its sixth shutout of the year Wednesday afternoon at Kelly Field.
The Bears improved to 16-3-1 on the year while MacMurray fell to 4-15 overall. WashU scored in double figures for the fifth time this season and in the process ended the game after seven innings with a double digit lead.
Junior Matt Ashbaugh, sophomore Tim Tague and freshman Teddy Washington combined for the seven inning shutout while holding the Highlanders to four hits and one walk. The trio totaled five strikeouts and did not permit an extra base hit.
In a game that featured 21 Bears, WashU's offense totaled 12 hits with freshman left fielder Brendan Hall, sophomore third baseman Collin Kahal and senior second baseman Evan Nagel each finishing the game with two hits apiece.
Hall put the Bears on the board in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly that scored junior center fielder John Ostrander. He later provided WashU's second home run of the year in the fifth on a 1-1 pitch that he deposited onto Forsyth Boulevard to give the Bears a 5-0 cushion.
WashU scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning as Ostrander, Kahal and Nagel all knocked in runs as well. Nagel scored the sixth run on a wild pitch after tripling. The Bears nearly hit for the cycle in fifth, falling just a single short as Kahal also doubled.
Ostrander hit his second sacrifice fly of the game in the sixth inning and one batter later pinch hitter Andrew Kleiboeker sent the ball on a deep drive to left field for what was originally ruled a three run homer. The play was overruled and Kleiboeker's blast was overturned to a ground rule run scoring double which put the Bears ahead 11-0.
Washington pitched around a leadoff single getting the next three batters out in order, including a strikeout to close out the contest. Tague earned the victory as Ashbaugh, the game's starter ended his outing in the fourth.
