St. Thomas salvages home baseball split with Macalester

Junior Dylan Brend pitched six strong innings and Tommie Baseball scored all four runs in two-out situations in Wednesday's 4-1 game-two victory over visiting Macalester in conference play at Koch Diamond.

The Scots won game one, 9-3, as all nine of their starters had at least one hit. Alex Denzler had a complete-game win for Macalester.

These were the first home games of the season for St. Thomas (11-4 overall, 3-1 MIAC).

Brend (2-0) allowed a first-inning run on a two-out infield single. He retired 13 of the last 15 batters he faced from the end of the second inning through the sixth, and finished with one walk allowed with four strikeouts.

Avery Lehman, Dan Bollingberg and Ryan Lust each had two-out RBI hits for the Tommies. Kyle Halverson had a hit in game one, but went 0-for-3 with a walk in game two to end his hitting streak at 14 games.

Tommie pitchers closed the day with 18 strikeouts with only four walks but allowed 21 hits by Macalester (8-7, 2-2).

St. Thomas plays two non-conference games Thursday at UW-La Crosse, and plays two at home next Tuesday against St. Mary's.
