Patterson, Tropeano and Lindner Notch Two Hits Apiece but WPI Upended by Amherst

Amherst, MA --- Sophomores Kai Terada-Herzer (Honolulu, HI) and Stephen Burke (Los Angeles, CA) each collected a pair of hits and totaled six RBI as the Amherst baseball team defeated visiting WPI, 10-7, Wednesday afternoon at Memorial Field.

The Mammoths (9-6) enter a weekend series with Williams on a three-game winning streak while the Engineers move to 16-7 ahead of their series with Clark.

Burke connected on a double and a triple while Terada-Herezer (stolen base) added a triple. Freshman Daniel Qin (Issaquah, WA) also chipped in with a pair of hits for the home team. Senior Chase Henley (Pleasanton, CA) doubled, sophomore Tyler Marshall (Raleigh, NC) contributed with a sacrifice fly and classmate Joseph Palmo (Austin, TX) stole a pair of bases. Burke was credited with the win and senior Mike Dow (Joliet, IL) secured the save. They shared the mount with freshman Sachin Nambiar (Larchmont, NY), junior Carson Glazier (San Marino, CA) and junior Zach Horwitz (Chestnut Hill, MA). As a staff, the Mammoths accumulated 11 strikeouts.

Junior Tyrone Patterson (Upper Marlboro, MD) batted 2-for-4 with a walk, two stolen bases, three RBI and a run scored. Senior Ryan Tropeano (Pembroke, MA) went 2-for-3 with a pair of walks and three stolen bases while classmate Austin Lindner (Princeton Jct., NJ) was 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored. Fellow senior  Steven Gallagher (Coventry, RI) chipped in with a pair of RBI to go with a double by junior David Larson (Port Tobacco, MD), who also struck out three in an inning on the mound. Graduate student Matt Howard (Worcester, MA) humored and freshman Martin McCormack (Quincy, MA) walked and stole a base. Junior Nick Tagaris (New City, NY) shouldered the decision for the Engineers. Senior Doug Rives (Bethany, CT), freshman Andrew Dupuis (Raymond, NH) and junior Nick Colucci (Lynnfield, MA) also got some work in.

Patterson chased home the first run with a single, followed by Gallagher with a two-run hit in the opening frame. Burke then delivered his first RBI of the day with two-outs in the home half of the inning. Tropeano scampered home on a miscue in the second for the 4-1 advantage. Howard began the third with a solo shot to center.

Burke later scored on a fielder's choice in the fourth before using a double to push two more across in the fifth. Patterson responded with a two-out two-run single in the top of the sixth. Terada-Herezer then tied the game with a three-run triple and plated the game-winning run on a miscue. Marshall and Qin each added insurance RBI in the seventh.

Amherst hosts the Ephs and WPI heads to Clark for 3:30pm first pitches on Friday.
