THE BASICS:

- The Lead: Led by a dominant eight-inning, 12-strikeout performance by senior Patrick Callahan (Vicksburg, Mich.), the MIT baseball team improved to 3-1 in NEWMAC play with a 9-0 shutout of Emerson College. The game is the first of a three-game series between the teams over the weekend.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- MIT kept up the offense right away as the Engineers struck for five runs on four hits in the first inning. Sophomore Andrew Krause (St. Louis, Mo.) singled through the right side to plate first-year Cory O'Shea (Glen Allen, Va.), followed by RBI singles from junior Thomas Allison (Kingwood, Texas) and senior Alec Kushner (Cooper City, Fla.). Sophomore Zach Roberts (West Chester, Pa.) drove in Allison on an RBI groundout to short, while sophomore Ethan Rolland (Burke, Va.) doubled to deep center to bring Kushner around for the 5-0 lead.

- Callahan kept the Lions off the board with 1-2-3 innings in the first, third, fifth and seventh as MIT kept adding to its lead. Senior Jared Schwait (Boca Raton, Fla.) scored an unearned run on an RBI groundout by junior Matt Johnston (Portola Valley, Calif.) in the second to stretch the lead to 6-0. RBI hits just inside the left field foul line from Roberts and Rolland in the third extended the lead to 8-0, while Rolland's sacrifice fly to center in the fifth scored Allison for the final run.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Callahan now sits at 3-0 on the season, going eight innings with just three hits allowed, one walk and a career-high 12 strikeouts. Tim Mainella took the loss for the Lions to drop to 1-4 as he went 4.2 innings with 10 hits, nine runs (eight earned), one walk and three strikeouts. For the Engineers, first-year Ben Burke (Chelmsford, Mass.) came on and pitched the ninth as he allowed one hit and a walk.

- Offensively, Allison was 3-for-4 with two runs scored to go along with two hits each from Roberts and Rolland. Rolland posted three RBI, while Roberts drove in a pair.

UP NEXT:

- MIT wraps up the three-game series with Emerson on Saturday as the Engineers travel to St. John's Prep in Danvers, Mass. for a doubleheader with the Lions. Game one will now start at 1:15 p.m. due to rain expected to fall overnight in the area.
