SUNY Oneonta Takes Series Finale Against Plattsburgh

A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta baseball team captured the rubber match of their three-game series against Plattsburgh Sunday afternoon with a 4-3 victory at Damaschke Field.

The Inside Story


Oneonta (12-13, 4-8 SUNYAC) jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the bottom of the first.  After back-to-back singles to start the game by Mickey Mullins and David Deberardinis, John Zinko drove is Mullins with an infield hit. A groundout to the right side by Vincent Prisco allowed Deberardinis to trot home to put the Red Dragons in front 2-0.

Plattsburgh (5-15, 3-9 SUNYAC) rallied for two runs in the top of the fourth, knotting the game at 2-2. With runners on second and third, Simon Alvarez put Plattsburgh on the board with an RBI groundout to short. A Rocco Cipriano single through the left side of the infield tied the game.

Oneonta went back in front in the bottom of the fourth. With two, Mike Graves got the inning started with a single to right, but an error by the outfielder allowed Graves to move into scoring position.  After another error by Plattsburgh put runners at the corners, a wild pitch allowed Graves to scamper home to give the Red Dragons a 3-2 advantage.

Oneonta added a crucial run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI double by James Zupo to left field, scoring Vincent Prisco to make the score 4-2.  Plattsburgh threatened in the top of the ninth with one run, but with the tying run on first base, Steven Gerringer got Anthony Maag to groundout to short to end the game.

Ryan Fay earned the win after tossing three scoreless innings in relief while striking out two Cardinals.  Steven Gerringer earned his third save of the season after getting the final four outs of the game. John Zinko went 3-for-4 on the day with an RBI while Mike Graves had a pair of hits and a run scored.

What's Next
The Red Dragons return to action on Friday, April 12th when they travel to Oswego for their SUNYAC series opener with the Lakers at 3:00 p.m.
