Carthage Takes Two at Lakeland on April 9

First baseman Vince Schwartz, the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin leader in RBI, knocked in four runs on Tuesday, April 9, as the Carthage College baseball team (14-10) swept a doubleheader from Lakeland University (2-17), 11-2 and 8-0, at Muskie Field in Howards Grove, Wis.

Johnny Belskis, with an RBI-single in the second, gave Carthage a 1-0 lead in the opener.  The Red Men loaded the bases with nobody out in the fifth, and Schwartz singled in two runs.  Luke Beckmann followed with a single to score a run, and Johnny Belskis delivered a sacrifice fly to put Carthage up, 5-0.

The Muskies scored two in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 5-2.  The Red Men scored four more in the sixth to a take a 9-2 lead.  Ryan Kramer doubled in two runs, Myles Farley singled in another, and Beckmann singled in the fourth run of the inning.  Carthage added two more in the seventh on a two-run double by Beckmann to close out the scoring at 11-2.

Chance Roach (2-1) was the winning pitcher, as he limited the Muskies to a pair of runs on five hits, no walks and four strikeouts over seven innings.  Owen Reith blanked Lakeland over the final two innings.  Collin Schutz (0-2), the first-of-five Muskie Hurlers, took the loss and surrendered eight runs, six earned, on nine hits and a walk over five and one-third innings.  Carthage's Luke Beckmann went four-for-five with two doubles and four RBI.  Johnny Belskis went three-for-four with two RBI.  Ryan Kramer went two-for-three with two doubles and two RBI, and Schwartz drove in two.

In the nightcap, Carthage scored a run in the first on an RBI-single by Johnny Belskis to take a 1-0 lead, and Luke Beckmann's RBI-single in the third made it 2-0.  The Red Men added three more in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead.  Ryan Kramer hit a run-scoring single, and Beckmann hammered a two-run single.  In the seventh, Carthage upped its lead to 8-0, scoring once on an unearned run, scoring another on a wild pitch and scoring again on a Ryan Kramer single.  The Muskies went down in order in the bottom of the seventh in a seven-inning game.

Dante Guarascio (3-0) was the winning pitcher for the Red Men.  Guarascio blanked the Muskies on two hits, four walks and six strikeouts over six innings.  Brian Polaski worked the final frame.  Tayler Johann (0-1) took the loss for Lakeland and allowed five runs, four earned, on five hits and a walk over three and one-third innings.

Carthage collected 14 hits in the nightcap, with Ryan Kramer going three-for-four with two runs scored and two RBI.  Vince Schwartz went two-for-four with two RBI.  Schwartz has 38 RBI in 24 games this year.

Carthage returns to College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin action this weekend with a three-game series with league-leading Augustana College (Ill., 17-5-1, 6-1) at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field in Moline, Ill.  The two teams play a Saturday, April 13 doubleheader, starting at 1 p.m., followed by a Noon single game on Sunday, April 14.
