#18 Denison downs Marietta 11-2

MARIETTA, Ohio — No. 18 ranked Denison University defeated Marietta College by the score of 11-2 Thursday (April 11) evening under the lights at Don Schaly Stadium. The Pioneers slip to 10-14 on the season, while Denison improves to 22-2 overall.

The Big Red scored three runs in the top of the first inning and never trailed in the game. Marietta plated an unearned run in the bottom of the frame when Damian Yenzi reached on an error, stole second and scored on a single by Mike Hale.

Denison starter Will McManaman (5-0) threw 6.0 strong innings for the win. He allowed one unearned run on five hits with three walks and seven strikeouts. Three other Big Red pitchers each worked an inning of relief.

Justin Aviles (0-2) started and took the loss for the Pioneers. The freshman had some control problems in the first inning walking three batters. Aviles threw 4.2 innings and allowed five runs on five hits with four walks and seven strikeouts.

Denison pulled away with runs in each of the last five innings. The Big Red scored two runs in the fifth and sixth innings, one each in the seventh and eighth and two more in the ninth.

Marietta added another unearned run in the eighth inning. Logan Vietmeier led off with a walk and advanced to second on an error. A fielder's choice moved Vietmeier to third where he later scored on a sac fly from Seamus Kenneally.

Freshman Isaac Danford had Marietta's only extra base hit, a double.

Marietta is back in action this Saturday (April 13) when Wilmington College visits Don Schaly Stadium for Community Day sponsored by Qdoba and Burger King. Community Day activities start at 11 a.m. and the first game starts at 1 p.m.
