Oxy Sweeps Caltech

LOS ANGELES — The Occidental baseball team beat Caltech twice on Saturday to complete the three-game sweep on the Beavers this weekend.

The Tigers won the three games by a combined score of 27-3 in 23 innings.

After sweeping Pomona-Pitzer last weekend, Oxy has won six games in a row and is a half game ahead of La Verne for second place.

Game 2: Occidental 10, Caltech 0 - 7 innings

Oxy first year starting Pitcher Diego Ramirez led the Tigers in Game 1, throwing a two-hitter in all seven innings pitched, with six strikeouts and no walks. 

The Tigers scored one run in the third, fourth and fifth and then exploded for seven in the seventh to end the game.

Oxy shortstop Michael Ingram had an outstanding game, going 2 for five with a walk-off Grand slam in the seventh. Oxy catcher Jared Baur also homered in his only at bat.

Gus Patrick went 1 for 2 with a pair of runs scored, Jake Fredrickson was 1 for 3 with a double, an RBI and two runs, Michael Netzel was 1 for 3 with a run and Jack Brancheau went 1 for 4 with a pair of RBIs.

Game 3: Occidental 13, Caltech 2 - 7 innings

Oxy got up 7-0 after two innings and cruised to an easy victory to complete the sweep.

Jake Fredrickson, who was named to the D3baseball team of the Week after a great series against Pomona-Pitzer last weekend, had a big game, going 2 for 3 with double and six RBIs. Reid Gibbs went 1 for 1 with three runs and a pair of RBIs, Jared Baur went 2 for 3 with a double, a run and two RBIs, and Angelo Zorn went 1 for 2 with two runs.

Tom Butler earned the win for the Tigers, pitching the first six innings with five strikeouts, one walk, seven hits and no earned runs.

Next Game: The Tigers begin an important three-game series with La Verne next Friday at 3 p.m. at Anderson Field.
