Ithaca Sweeps St. John Fisher in E8 Twin Bill, 4-3 and 2-1

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College baseball team ran its winning streak to seven straight games with an Empire 8 Conference doubleheader sweep of St. John Fisher College, 4-3 and 2-1, on Saturday at Freeman Field. Ithaca is now 19-5 on the year and 12-1 in the Empire 8, while Fisher drops to 17-9 and 3-4.

GAME ONE: Ithaca 4, Fisher 3

The Bombers struck first in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI groundout by sophomore Jack Lynchwith the bases loaded to plate just Buzz Shirley to give IC a 1-0 lead. Ithaca started off the inning with a double down the right field line by senior Garrett Snyder, who then moved up to third on an error off the bat of Shirley. Snyder was retired on the next at bat on a plate at the plate and then senior Cam Fuoti drew a walk to fill the bases.

Fisher tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third inning on a ringing RBI double down the right field line by Justin Graham. The Cardinals continued to threaten in the frame with a pair of runners in scoring position and one out, but graduate student Tyler Hill maneuvered through the jam with back-to-back strikeouts.

In the bottom of the third, senior Sam Little stroked a two-out double to the left-center gap, and what appeared to be a run-scoring base hit by Snyder was snatched out of the air by Graham to keep IC off the board.

The Cardinals then took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on a two-out solo home run to left field by Antony Mantova. Fisher's inning continued with an RBI single to center by Stephen Edgett to make the score 3-1.

Ithaca tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on back-to-back RBI doubles from Shirley and senior Matt Carey. Snyder scored from first on Shirley's gapper to right-center and Shirley crossed on Carey's extra base hit to left-center.

The Bombers walked-off with the Game One win in the bottom of the seventh as S. Little sent a low liner through the left side of the infield with senior Adam Gallagher on the move. Gallagher advanced to third and then sprinted home on an outfield error by Fisher to come away with the victory. Gallagher continued the inning with a two-out base hit up the middle.

Hill earned his fifth win of the season in a complete game effort with nine strikeouts. Hill allowed three runs on six hits but retired the final 10 batters he faced in order.

S. Little went 2-for-4 in the opener to pace the offense. Five other Bombers had hits in the game and IC notched four doubles.

GAME TWO: Ithaca 2, Fisher 1

The Bombers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on a wild pitch to score senior Webb Little, who led off the inning with a walk. Gallagher followed the W. Little walk with a bloop single to right to place runners on the corners. On the run-scoring wild pitch, Gallagher was stealing on the delivery and moved to third. He then tried to score on another wild pitch but was thrown out at the plate to keep the score at 1-0.

In the top of the seventh, Fisher knotted the game at 1-1 with an RBI single to left field with two outs. After an intentional walk, junior Tom Cosentino kept the game deadlocked with a fly out to center.

Cosentino tossed seven innings and allowed seven hits with an earned run and four strikeouts.

Fisher threatened to take the lead in the top of the eighth as the lead-off batter reached on a hit by pitch and a single followed. Senior Matt Eiel got out of the situation with an infield fly, a fly out to right and a strikeout to preserve the 1-1 tie.

The Bombers regained the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning on a line drive base hit to center by Gallagher to bring in sophomore Jack Lynch, who led off with a base hit through the right side. Lynch then moved up to third on a sac bunt and groundout to set up the go-ahead run.

Eiel picked up the win in two innings of relief with one hit allowed and a strikeout.

Gallagher was 3-for-4 in the nightcap with two stolen bases and an RBI, while S. Little walked twice.

The conference foes will conclude their three-game series tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. The game was originally scheduled for 1 p.m., but potential heavy rain in the afternoon forced the time change.
