Memphis - Rhodes College baseball picked up their fourth straight victory after a three hour and 48 minute conference matchup over Berry to sweep the series. The Lynx overcame the Vikings on a walk-off single in the ninth after recording 15 of the 27 hits in the game. The win is the 22nd for the Lynx who are now tied for third with Berry in the Southern Athletic Association with 11-7 conference records. On Friday, Rhodes defeated the Vikings 7-3 and 9-7.
Each team scored a run in the first inning for Berry took an 8-2 lead in the fourth inning. Three straight walks to lead off the bottom of the fifth helped the Lynx score five runs. Ben Wilson singled to right and cleared the bases when Berry's right fielder missed the pickup. The error would soon be erased as Jacob Telli stepped up to the plate next and tallied two RBI on a home run. With two outs and Rhodes trailing by one in the sixth inning, Wilson singled and then reached third on a Telli single ro right field. Telli stole second, his 18th of the season before Wilson scored on yet another Lynx single (Brady John) to tie the game. The Lynx took their first lead when Telli scored on a wild pitch before Paul Giacomazzi doubled in John to put Rhodes up 10-8.
Berry tied the game on two unearned runs on a Lynx fielding error in the seventh. Matt Dale, who entered the game for Rhodes in the fifth, sat the Vikings down in order in the eighth, allowing the Lynx to plate one run in the bottom of the inning when Giacomazzi hit an RBI groundout to first base. With two outs in the ninth, Berry hit three singles in a row to lead 10-9. The Lynx rallied once again in the bottom of the ninth when Ryan Palermo led off with a walk. A sac bunt, Viking fielding error and intentionally walk loaded the bases with one out. Wilson stepped to the plate and hit a walk-off single right past the Viking shortstop for his fourth hit of the day and key conference victory.
Wilson went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI. Telli walked four times, went 2-for-2 with three RBI and three runs scored. Giacomazzi went 3-for-6 and Palermo tallied three walks. Dale struck out three Vikings and allowed just one earned run in four innings of work. Alex Garrett picked up the win in the ninth, his second of the week.
Prior to the cold and rainy win, the Lynx were finally able to honor their 15 seniors after Saturday's game was postponed. Rhodes will conclude the regular season at Hendrix College April 19-20. The Lynx are vieing for a first or second place finish in the regular season, which would earn them the right to host the first weekend of the SAA tournament. Hendrix, who is currently first in the SAA standings holds a 13-5 SAA record while Birmingham-Southern is 12-6 against conference opponents.
