BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- Shayne Erny's (North Ridgeville, Ohio/St. Edward) sixth-inning grand slam lifted Washington & Jefferson baseball to a 15-6 comeback victory over Geneva this afternoon.

Following tonight's win, the Presidents improve to 20-9 overall and 15-1 in conference. With the loss, Geneva falls to 6-19 overall and 1-14 in the PAC.

The Presidents began the game in the first inning by taking a quick 2-0 lead. Joey Bolick (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) opened the contest with a single and a stolen base. After a Mullen Socha (Independence, Ohio/St. Ignatius) single in the next at-bat, Josh Crummer (Great Falls, Va./Flint Hill School) and Spencer Howell(Oakwood, Ohio/Oakwood) logged back-to-back sac flies to bring in the two runs.

The Golden Tornadoes went on a scoring run to take the lead. With one run in the bottom of the first, three in the fourth and one more in the fifth, Geneva went up by a score of 5-2.

Trailing in the sixth, W&J began to rally with a two-RBI single from Justin Griffin (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East). Two batters later and with the bases loaded, Erny belted his first career homer down the left field line to drive home all four runs.

Leading 8-5 heading into the eighth, the game's momentum was firmly in the Presidents' grasp. A five-run eighth blew the bout wide open for a 13-5 W&J advantage. Four of the five runs were unearned following three Geneva errors. Erny, Crummer and Adam Moore (Olean, N.Y./Archbishop Walsh) all had RBI in the inning.

Two more runs in the top of the ninth sealed the victory for the Presidents, 15-6.

In total, nine W&J players tallied one hit in the game, led by Moore with a season-best 4-for-6 day at the plate. Crummer was next with three hits, two of which were doubles. The senior is tied for 10th in the country with 15 doubles this year, which is tied for sixth in season-season program history.

Erny and Cole Reese (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) rounded out the Presidents' players with at least two hits. Erny also finished tonight with a career-best five RBI, which more than doubled his career total to eight over the last three seasons.

On the pitching mound, Ben Marsico (Bradford Woods, Pa./North Allegheny) picked up his PAC-leading seventh win, going 5.0 innings. The junior allowed five runs, four earned, while tying his career high with seven strikeouts.

Michael Zito (Nashville, Tenn./Hume-Fogg) entered in relief and pitched 3.0 strong innings. Zito struck out a career-best four batters and did not allow a base runner over his appearance.

The Presidents and Golden Tornadoes are slated to conclude their regular-season series on Saturday, April 20. The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at Ross Memorial Park.
