Spalding wins 10th straight

EUREKA, Ill. – The Spalding University baseball team extended their win streak to 10 games after taking two games from Eureka, 12-5 and 11-4, Wednesday at Henry Sand Field in Eureka, Ill. The Golden Eagles improve to 23-7 on the season and 12-1 in conference.

 

GAME ONE

SPALDING 12 – EUREKA 5

The Golden Eagles wasted no time getting on the scoreboard plating three runs in the top of the first. Eric Meyer got it going driving in Garrett Wilson and Cody Milliner with a double to left center, and Dillon Sievert push Meyer across home plate with a single to center. The Red Devils chipped away at the SU lead scoring one run in the bottom of the first, third and fifth to knot the score at, 3-3, heading into the sixth. However, the Golden Eagles offense exploded for nine runs over the next two innings to put the game out of reach. In the sixth, three walks juiced the bases and a fourth walk scorde the first run of the inning. Evan Trentman, followed with a bases clearing grand slam, to put SU in front, 8-3. A pair of home runs put four more runs on the board in the seventh. The first, a Garrett Wilson hit three-run homer scored Bryce Spalding and Zane Baker and Meyer capped off the game with a solo shot to left.

 

NOTABLE STATS

Zach Jones (6-0) picked up the win holding Eureka to three runs, on five hits, while striking out three batters in 5.0 innings pitched. Lane Staples finished out the final two innings limiting the Red Devils to two runs, on five hits, while striking out four. At the plate, Meyer and Wilson each went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Milliner finished 3-for-5 and Trentman had a team-high four RBIs on a 1-for-2 performance.

 

GAME TWO

SPALDING 11 – EUREKA 4

Spalding scored a trio of runs in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. Zane Baker grounded out to second to bring Trentman across for the first run of the game, and JT Johnson capped off the inning with a two-run homer to left. SU scored five runs over the next two innings extending their lead to eight runs. In the third, Meyer hit his second home run on the day and eighth of the season to make it, 4-0, and a Meyer two-run double in the fourth extended the lead to six runs. Quenton Brownlee followed with a single to right driving in Meyer and Bryce Spalding doubled to bring Brownlee across for the final run of the inning. Eureka scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth, but Spalding answered with three more in the top of the sixth to push the lead back to eight runs. Brownlee led off the inning with a home run to left and Baker drove in Spalding and Trentman with single. Eureka scored a run in the bottom of the sixth and the game was called heading into the seventh due to darkness resulting in an 11-4 final.

 

NOTABLE STATS

Aaron Blake (2-2) earned the win restricting the Red Devils to three runs, on five hits, while striking out three batters in 3 and 2/3 innings. Logan Koch and freshman Drew Switzer both saw some relief action. Koch allowed one run, on two hits and struck out one batter in 1 and 1/3 inning, while Switzer held the Red Devils hitless and struck out one batter in 1.0 inning of action. At the plate, Brownlee, Meyer and Spalding each went 3-for-4 with Meyer driving in three RBIs. Trentman and Sievert each went 2-for-4 and Baker drove in three runs on a 1-for-3 performance.

 

UP NEXT

The Golden Eagles return home hosting a SLIAC weekend series against the Principia Panthers at Derby City Field. The series will kick-off with a Friday doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm ET, and concludes with nine innings Saturday at 1:00 pm ET.
