WAYNE, N.J. – Senior Corey Martinez tossed 108 pitches during a complete-game effort and the William Paterson baseball team (20-10, 6-5 NJAC) crossed the plate four times in the eighth inning, securing a 5-1 home victory against Rutgers-Newark (9-15, 3-8 NJAC) April 18.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Junior second baseman Matt Ferrara reached base on a third-strike wild pitch and sophomore first baseman Carson Weis singled to right field, bringing sophomore catcher Steve Yelin to the plate with one out during the home half of the first. His ground ball was fielded by the shortstop, who flipped to the second baseman. The throw from second to first was not in time to turn the double play and Ferrara was running hard the entire way, beating a throw to the plate for a 1-0 edge.
- A Scarlet Raider leadoff triple and a sacrifice fly to center knotted the score at 1-1 in the top of the fourth.
- A Weis single and Yelin walk led to a Carlos Perez RBI-double to center field, making it a 2-1 WP advantage with one out in the eighth. After a groundout, junior designated hitter Dan Abate sent a hard-hit ball to center that the fielder allowed to bounce over his head and roll to the fence, a single and error that resulted in Abate coming all the way around and scoring, pushing the lead to 5-1.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Abate was 2-for-4 and drove in two runs. Weis went 2-for-4 and touched home once.
- Martinez improved to 5-0, scattering six hits and registering a pair of strikeouts while tossing his third career complete game.
