How It Happened

Game 1

  • Roth did not walk a batter in raising his record to 7-0 this season and 23-2 for his career. He hurled his fourth complete game of the season.
  • The Yellow Jackets started the scoring in the second. Junior catcher Reece Yeargain (Chester, Va./Benedictine) drew a leadoff walk and moved to second when junior outfielder Shawn Nickles (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) drew a base on balls. A single to center by sophomore DH Kevin Mooney (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) brought home Yeargain and sent Nickles to third. With one away, junior shortstop Zach Evans (Fort Mill, S.C./Seneca) laid down a safety squeeze to bring home Nickles and give R-MC a 2-0 lead.
  • In the fourth, Mooney had a one-out single, went to third on a base hit to right by junior first baseman Cole Grinde (Woodford, Va./Caroline) and scored when Evans reached on a fielder's choice as the R-MC advantage grew to 3-0.
  • After the Panthers plated one in the sixth, the Yellow Jackets added insurance runs in the eighth. Senior second baseman Jeff Butler (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) had a leadoff double and advanced to third on a base hit by junior third baseman Mike Nickles (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge). A failed pickoff attempt at first moved Mike Nickles to second and brought home Butler. Yeargain doubled to left center, advancing Mike Nickles to third. Shawn Nickles was walked intentionally to load the bases. After a pair of strikeouts, Evans singled to left to bring home Mike Nickles and Yeargain to make the score 6-1.

By The Numbers - Game 1

  • Evans went 1 for 3 with four RBI.
  • Mooney was 2 for 4 with one run and one RBI.
  • Yeargain went 1 for 3 with a walk and two runs.

Game 2

  • After Ferrum tallied three in the top of the first in the nightcap, R-MC put up its own crooked number in the bottom of the frame. Junior outfielder Ryan Duphorn (Erial, N.J./Paul VI) singled to left and went to second on a bunt single by Butler. Mike Nickles reached on an error to load the bases. Yeargain drew a walk to force in Duphorn with the first run. Shawn Nickles reached on a fielder's choice, bringing home Butler. Junior catcher Jacob Selden (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) was hit by a pitch to load the bases before a sacrifice fly by Evans drove in Mike Nickles. Shawn Nickles scored on a wild pitch to put the Yellow Jackets on top 4-3. Duphorn walked with the bases loaded to drive in Selden as the advantage grew to 5-3.
  • The Panthers pulled within one in the top of the third. In the bottom of the third, freshman Spencer Pietruszynski (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) drew a one-out walk and stole second. With two away, Butler singled to right to plate Pietruszynski and make the score 6-4.
  • Ferrum again made it a one-run game in the top of the sixth before Selden tripled and scored on an error to extend the lead to 7-5.
  • R-MC put the game away with a six-run rally with two outs in the seventh. Yeargain and Selden both had two-run singles to highlight the innings as the Yellow Jackets took a 13-5 advantage.

By The Numbers - Game 2

  • Junior right-hander Michael Zubovich (Chantilly, Va./Freedom) fanned nine in five innings in picking up the win, raising his record to 6-0.
  • R-MC relievers retired the final 11 Panthers. Sophomore lefty Zack Radcliffe (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) set down the final two batters in the sixth. Senior right-hander Daniel Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville) retired the side in the seventh and eighth with one strikeout. Senior righty Jack Maccagnan (Chesapeake, Va./Greenbriar Christian) set Ferrum down in order in the ninth with one punchout.
  • Yeargain went 1 for 3 with two walks, one run and three RBI.
  • Selden was 2 for 3 with three runs and two RBI.
