The SUNY Oneonta baseball team wrapped up the regular season with a convincing 10-0 victory over SUNY Poly Thursday afternoon at Damaschke Field.
The Inside Story
Oneonta (17-18) got on the board in the bottom of the first when John Zinko nearly missed a home run with an RBI double off the top of the left field fence, scoring Dominic Lamonica to make it 1-0. The Red Dragons added to their lead with three runs in the bottom of the second. After Patrick McGee got the inning started with a walk and a stolen base, Sean McGlynn drove him home with a single to center. With two runners in scoring position, David Deberardinis hit a two-run single up the middle to give Oneonta a 4-0 advantage.
Oneonta put the game out of reach with three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Mickey Mullins got the inning started with a double to right center. With runners on the corners after a David Deberardinis infield single, Mickey Mullins would score from third when the Wildcats threw down to second on an attempted steal by Deberardinis. James Zupo capped off the inning with a two run single to centerfield, scoring Chris Saitch and John Zinko to put the Red Dragons in front 7-0.
Oneonta tallied their eighth run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI groundout by Sean McGlynn, plating Mike Graves from third. The Red Dragons added two more in bottom of the eighth inning. The first run came on an RBI groundout by Vincent Prisco, with the final coming on a balk, allowing Robert Ottaviano to trot home from third.
Mickey Mullins paced the Oneonta offense with a 3-for-5 day with three runs scored. James Zupo and David Deberardinis each had a pair of hits and two RBI while Mike Graves went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Steven Gerringer earned the win after tossing the first five innings of the game, striking out four Wildcats while scattering four hits. Ryan Steeg and Joseph Canonaco each threw a scoreless inning in relief while Ryan Fay got the final six outs without allowing a hit.
