FREDERICK, Md. - Senior Nate Luscombe pitched seven innings of one-hit baseball and classmate Nathan Kessler scored three runs as Hood College claimed a 4-2 victory on Senior Day over Widener.

The win was the Blazers' 10th in a row.

Inside the Box Score

  • Luscombe was perfect for six innings before allowing a single in his final inning of work. He struck out five and did not walk a batter. The win made him the first Hood pitcher to reach 20 in a career.
  • Kessler went 2 for 3 in the game and was hit by a pitch. He scored three times and stole two bases, becoming the first Blazer with 50 steals in school history.
  • Brad Sawyer went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI.
  • Trent Copenhaver was 1 for 2 with a sacrifice and an RBI.

How it Happened

  • Kessler led off the bottom of the first with a single, stole second, moved to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch.
  • The bottom of the third started with Kessler reaching on a hit by pitch. He stole second and was bunted to third by Copenhaver before scoring on another wild pitch for a 2-0 lead.
  • The Blazers doubled the lead in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out rally. After Alex Staton walked, Kessler, Copenhaver and Sawyer all singled to bring in a pair of runners.
  • It was far more than enough support for Luscombe. He retired the first 18 batters he faced, with only two balls leaving the infield. Matt Samson led off the seventh with a base hit up the middle, just out of the reach of the outstretched arm of Copenhaver. Luscombe retired the next three batters in order to retire the side.
  • Des Grimes came on in relief to start the eighth and the first three batters reached to load the bases. Grimes struck out each of the next two hitters and forced a fly out to work his way out of the jam unscathed.
  • The Pride scored two runs in the ninth when Daren Wood doubled to drive in a pair of runners but Connor Henniges escaped the inning without further damage.

Notes

  • Wood went 2 for 4 for the Pride.
