Sewanee Baseball Falters Late in SAA Tourney Opening Game

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Sewanee baseball team rallied from a 7-2 deficit in the third inning to even the score at 10 runs each after seven innings, but fell in the ninth, 11-10, to No. 25/28 Birmingham-Southern at the opening day of the 2019 Southern Athletic Association Baseball Tournament in the Birmingham-Southern pod from Striplin Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-The 7-seeded Tigers made some noise early in the first inning. Chris McNulty brought the first run home on a sacrifice fly, while Jack Galanek laced an RBI single.

-The Panthers responded with seven runs in the second and third innings to make it a 7-2 affair after three.

-Sewanee got back into the contest in the fourth inning with a three-run bomb off the bat of Riley Brandvold to make the contest 7-5 in favor of the home team.

-The Purple and Gold rallied to tie the game at seven runs apiece in the fifth. Wesley Christian brought Trey Akins home via a groundout, while Braxton Swanson knocked a base hit up the middle.

-BSC reclaimed the lead in the bottom half of the frame and added two runs in the sixth to make it a 10-7 game after six innings.

-Sewanee, once again, did not go down without a fight. After McNulty scored to make it 10-8, Bryce Benedict brought home two runs on an RBI hit to tie the game at 10 runs each.

-The Tigers had the opportunity to take their first lead of the game in the ninth with runners at second and third and one out. However, Richie Misischia got Jake Woolard and Akins to each ground out to end the inning.

-In the bottom half of the ninth inning, the Panthers' leadoff hitter, A.J. Hunt reached base on an infield hit, and he later got into scoring position with a stolen base.

-Misischia, who got out of the jam in the top half of the frame on the mound, recorded a bunt base hit to third, and Hunt came home on an error by Sewanee to secure the 11-10 win.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Riley Brandvold was a triple shy of the cycle with a 3-for-5 day at the plate with two runs scored and three RBI. The senior launched his eighth homer of the season.

-Trey Akins and Chris McNulty each recorded two base hits and runs scored.

-Lucas DeSantis (3-1) allowed one unearned run on three hits in two-thirds of an inning.

BIRMINGHAM-SOUTHERN KEY STATISTICS
-Preston Munns went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI in the win.

-Richie Misischia (8-1) allowed two walks in the ninth, but he did not allow a run to cross.

UP NEXT
Sewanee will look to fend off elimination Saturday afternoon. The loser of the Berry/Oglethorpe contest will take on the Tigers Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
