Trinity Baseball Closes Long Home Stand With Shutout Of Union

Hartford, Conn. – Junior RHP Andrew DeRoche (North Reading, Mass.) improved to 6-2 with six scoreless innings to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 7-0 victory over the visiting Union College Dutchmen in baseball action this evening on Murren Family Field at DiBenedetto Stadium.  Trinity, playing in its final home game of the regular season and capping off a 14-game home stand, improves to 26-7.  The Bantams close the regular campaign with a road doubleheader at Wesleyan on Sunday at 2 p.m.  Union drops to 14-20 with its eighth loss in a row heading into a noon doubleheader at Skidmore on Saturday.

Trinity scored in each of the first five innings, while DeRoche cruised through six frames with four strikeouts, a walk, and just two hits allowed.  Three walks and an RBI groundout by Trinity junior tri-captain Alex Rodriguez (Windsor, Conn.) accounted for the first run of the game, and another RBI grounder by junior OF Matt Koperniak (Adams, Mass.) gave the Bantams a 2-0 led after two innings.  The Bantams scored three runs in the third thanks to three Dutchmen errors and a two-out, two-RBI by sophomore C Eric Thronson (McLean, Va.), and the home team added its seventh run, and its fourth unearned run, in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Three Union relievers held Trinity scoreless over the final three frames, while Trinity senior tri-captain LHP Erik Mohl (Milton, Mass.) struck out three batters in the seventh and eighth, and rookie teammates Will Simeone (Milton, Mass.) threw a perfect ninth.  Bantam sophomore Robbie Cronin (Wellesley Hills, Mass.) went 2-for-4 at the plate with a stolen base.  Trinity did not commit an error, while Union had five errors.  Freshman Tom Scherrer (Skaneateles, N.Y.) took the loss for Union, and Dutchmen senior OF Joe Ganim (Easton, Conn.) had a double.
