SUNY Oneonta Stuns Nationally-Ranked Cortland in SUNYAC Tournament opener

A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta baseball team stunned Nationally-Ranked SUNY Cortland 3-2 in the opening game of the SUNYAC Tournament Saturday morning.


The Inside Story
Oneonta (18-18) broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth when Dominic Lamonica belted a solo home run over the left field fence. Cortland (29-10-1) responded in the bottom of the inning on a two-out RBI single by James Varian to score Scott Giordano.

In the top of the eighth, Oneonta took the lead when Mike Graves scored from first on a throwing error on a Sean McGlynn sacrifice bunt attempt. With McGlynn on third, David Deberardinis hit a sacrifice fly to center to give Oneonta a 3-1 advantage.

Cortland rallied for a run in the bottom of the eighth. Colin BeVard got the inning started with a two-out single before Scott Giordano pulled Cortland within a run with a double to centerfield.

Senior hurler Robert Ottaviano retired Cortland in order in the bottom of the ninth to secure the victory. Ottaviano allowed two runs on six hits while striking out five to earn his seventh win of the season.

Oneonta's post-season win over Cortland is just the second in program history and first since 2010.

The Red Dragons will play the winner of the Oswego and Fredonia game tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m.
