More news about: WPI

Northboro, MA --- Sophomore Tyler Bell (Abington, MA) pitched a complete-game three-hit shutout while junior Sean Harrington (Walpole, MA) batted 2-for-3 with a three-run homer as third-seeded, and nationally-ranked Babson ousted second-seeded WPI from the 2019 NEWMAC Baseball Championship with a 7-0 win in Game 6 Monday morning at the New England Baseball Complex.

The Beavers (32-6), who are seventh in a pair of national polls and fourth in the NCAA Division III regional rankings, moves on to host MIT tomorrow at a time to be determined.

WPI senior Steven Gallagher (Coventry, RI), who was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, broke up Bell's no-hit bid with one out in the bottom of the fifth as junior Tyrone Patterson (Upper Marlboro, MD) accounted for the other Engineer hit. Freshman Alexander Mondro (Westford, MA), senior Dominic Fusco (North Haven, CT), senior Rob Chase (Grand Isle, VT) and senior Doug Rives (Bethany, CT) all spent time on the mound.

Bell also finished with five strikeouts and did not issue a walk. Junior Matthew Valente (Wyckoff, NJ) also had a pair of hits for Babson (2-for-4) as freshman Thomas Lapham (Charlestown, MA), senior Connor Gill (Sterling, MA) and senior Nicholas Browne (Mount Laurel, NJ) each added an RBI.

Junior Jake Oliger (Newtown, CT) put the Beavers on the board with an RBI single to left in the first. An inning later, Browne used a productive ground out and Lapham singled up the middle to give Babson the 3-0 lead. Gill chased Browne home with a single before Harrington connected on his three-run shot to right in the fourth.

The Engineers were retired in order seven of the nine innings including the final two.

WPI concludes its season with a 23-16 record.
