#1 CUC Downs CUW and Aurora To Force Winner Take All Game Tomorrow

MEQUON, Wis. -- Facing elimination, the No. 1 Concordia Chicago baseball team kept their chances alive for a 2019 NACC Tournament championship today with two wins. The Cougars opened the day by defeating Concordia Wisconsin 7-2 to advance to the championship game. CUC then defeated Aurora 5-4 to force a winner take all game tomorrow afternoon.

 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Cole Carman gave CUC the boost in game one. He picked up the win working eight innings and allowing just one earned run while striking out a career high ten.
  • Keegan Tyrell and Connor Brandon both homered against CUW as CUC pounded out 12 hits.
  • Anthony Rogers and Mike Tobin shut the door in relief of game two with Rogers picking up the win and Tobin the save.
  • Abelardo Paz Agudelo singled to begin the ninth for CUC and Matt Fauth brought home pinch runner Mateo Calle on a sac fly for the go-ahead run.

 

GAME ONE: W, 7-2

 

CUC opened the scoring in the top of the second. Brayden Benavides led off with a single to center. Paz followed with a single of his own. A wild pitch then put the two in scoring position. A sac fly made it 1-0 and a Jose Mercado single through the left side made it 2-0. With the bases loaded an errant CUW throw allowed the Cougars to extend the lead to 4-0.

 

CUW got a single run back on a homer in the bottom of the third. CUC got that run back and one in the top of the fifth. With one out and one on Brandon launched a two run homer over the right field fence on an 0-0 pitch to make it 6-1.

 

That score held until Tyrell launched a long ball of his own to left to make it 7-1 in the seventh. CUW got a single unearned run in the bottom of the eighth, but Tobin closed the door to put CUC in the championship game.

 

GAME TWO: W, 6-5

 

CUC opened the scoring in the championship game in the first. Mercado reached on an error to open the inning. One out later Bryan VanDuser sinlged home Mercado who was on second to take a 1-0 lead.

 

Aurora answered with one of their own in the bottom half, but CUC took the lead again in the second. With one on and one out Rodriguez singled through the left side to put two on. One out later Mercado doubled down the left field line, scoring two to make it 3-1. Tyrell followed with a double of his own to make it 4-1 Cougars.

 

The Spartans got a run back in the bottom of the second to make it 4-2. Starter Kyle Strepek worked through the third clean, but Aurora tied it with two runs on a homer to left in the fourth.

 

The pitching settled things down on both sides until the ninth. Paz led the inning off with a single through the left side. One out later pinch runner Calle stole second and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Fauth then brought home the go-ahead run with a deep sac fly to right field to make it 5-4.

 

Tobin came in and worked a clean 1-2-3 ninth to pick up his seventh save of the year and force a winner take all championship game tomorrow at noon.
