Ithaca's Carey Named Google Cloud CoSIDA Third-Team Academic All-American

ITHACA, N.Y. – On Tuesday, June 4, the College Sports Information Directors of Academic released its Google Cloud Academic All-Americans for the 2019 baseball season and Ithaca College senior outfielder Matt Carey was selected to the third-team. Carey becomes the first IC baseball player to achieve this distinguished honor since 2010-11 (David Ahonen) and is the seventh player in program history to be selected as an Academic All-American. He is also the 97th student-athlete since 1969-70 to be named Academic All-American.

On this year's Google Cloud Academic All-America teams, nine of the 33 members of the 2019 Google Cloud All-America® Division III Academic All-America® Division III baseball teams had a perfect 4.00 cumulative GPA. The 11 members of the first team have an average cumulative GPA of 3.97 and the 33 student-athletes that make up all three teams have an average cumulative GPA of 3.84. The Division III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2018-19 Division III Academic All-America® teams program.

Carey finished his academic career at Ithaca with a 3.92 GPA in business administration and was a four-year starter on the diamond as a centerfielder.

Academically, Carey was named to the Empire 8 Conference President's List seven times. Recipients of this honor must earn a 3.75 grade point average or higher while participating in an intercollegiate sponsored sport. In addition, the student-athlete must display positive conduct on and off campus and be enrolled full-time at the member institution.

This past spring at the IC senior student-athlete brunch, Carey earned the Bernard Senior Scholar-Athlete Award for earning the top GPA among male student athletes as well as the top GPA for spring sports.

On the diamond, he was a two-time Empire 8 All-Conference selection and was named to the NCAA Union, N.J. Regional All-Tournament Team as well as the Empire 8 All-Tournament Team this year. In 162 career games played with 142 starts, Carey batted .285 with 143 hits, 112 runs scored, 87 RBI, 68 walks, 31 doubles, 17 stolen bases and nine home runs.

In the field, Carey recorded 275 putouts and 10 outfield assists with just five career errors for an overall fielding percentage of .983.
