Nomura Hits Two Homeruns, Whitman Complete Sweep of Wildcats

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Jerick Nomura crushed two homeruns, the second over the left field wall, to guide the Blues to an 11-7 win and a series sweep over Linfield in Northwest Conference action, Sunday afternoon at Borleske Stadium.

Kevin Nakamura had a monster performance for the Blues (4-6, 3-0 NWC), batting 4-5 including two doubles with one run and three RBI. Brett Williams and Teague Conder both recorded a pair of hits with Williams adding three runs and Conder an RBI.

Matthew Sox (1-1) had his way with the Linfield order for most of his outing. He struck out 10 batters in five and two-thirds innings while giving up one run on six hits.

Ben Ranieri and Cameron Skinner recorded two hits to lead the Wildcats (4-6, 0-3 NWC) with Skinner adding a double and a run scored. Scott Brosius added two doubles and two RBI.

The Blues jumped on the Wildcats early with two runs in the first and another the second. Linfield starter Caden Slaughter (0-2), who allowed three runs in only two innings of work, had a tough time finding the zone. He hit Williams to open the game then threw two wild pitches over the course of the first inning leading to two Whitman runs.

The Blues plated their second-inning run all after Slaughter retired his first two hitters. Nomura drew a base on balls then stole second. Two batters later, Drew Vannaman hit a blooper to centerfield that landed, allowing Nomura to round third and score.

Whitman put the game out of reach with four runs in the sixth inning off Wildcat reliever Brannan Meriwether. Nomura opened the inning with a shot over the left field fence to add to the lead. Nakamura later hit a two-out bases empty double, leading to RBI hits from Leo Rivera and Conder as Whitman took an 8-1 lead into the seventh inning.

Nomura belted his second homerun, this time a two-run blast in the eighth inning, to put the Blues up by 10 runs. Linfield made a serious run with six runs in the ninth inning, but it was too much of a mountain to climb as Tristan Kalnins forced a pop up for the final out.

Whitman hits the road next weekend for more Northwest Conference action. The Blues face Whitworth in a three-game set beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 29.
