#15 Marietta downs Pitt Bradford 10-5

PORT CHARLOTTE, Florida — No. 15 ranked Marietta College scored 10 runs in the final two innings to come from behind and defeat the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford by the score of 10-5 Tuesday (March 10) afternoon in the Snowbird Classic. The Etta Express improves to 6-1 on the season, while Panthers slip to 4-4 overall.

"Give credit to both starting pitchers. Dalton (Wiggins) held them to two hits through six innings and we only had three off of their guy," Marietta head coach Brian Brewer said. "Our guys did a nice job of staying with it after some things didn't go our way in the seventh. This was a nice comeback win against a quality opponent."

Pitt Bradford finally broke the scoreless tie with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Three straight singles to start the inning left the bases loaded and chased Marietta starter Dalton Wiggins from the game.

Griffin Malick took over an induced a pop up to the shortstop for the first out. But a full count walk and a hit batsman each plated a run for the Panthers. Leading 2-0, Samuel Dreistadt grounded to third. Damian Yenzi fielded the ball and stepped on the bag for a force out, but his throw to first for the double play wasn't in time allowing a third Pitt run to score.

Wiggins worked six innings and was charged with three runs on five hits. He did not walk a Panther batter and struck out seven. Malick (1-0) would end up getting the win after throwing one inning with no runs and one walk.

The Pitt Bradford lead didn't last long as the Etta Express scored six runs in the eighth and then added four more in the ninth.

Dylan Albright led off the Pioneer eighth with a walk and was lifted for pinch runner, Trent Castle. A passed ball moved Castle to second and then a Drew Wilkinson single put runners on the corners with no outs. Brady Cottom reached on a fielder's choice when his chopper to the shortstop was misplayed. Castle scored on the error and Wilkinson was safe at second.

A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position with no outs. Following a strikeout, Yenzi lined a single to center scoring Wilkinson and Cottom to tie the game, 3-3, and knocking Pitt starter Ryan Boyer from the game. Boyer (2-2) would get tagged with the loss. He worked seven and one-third innings and allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits. Boyer walked one and struck out 10.

Logan Edmonds took over on the mound for Boyer and walked the first two batters he faced loading the bases with one out. Tate Engle dropped an RBI single into left field scoring Yenzi. Drew Holderbach grounded to the shortstop for a possible inning ending double play. But the relay throw to first was wild allowing two more Pioneers to score for a 6-3 Marietta lead.

Sam Mathews took over on the mound for Marietta and would earn his second save of the season. He worked two innings and gave up two runs on three hits. He struck out two.

Alex Page and Holderbach each had two-run hits in the ninth extending the Pioneer lead to 10-3. Page doubled down the left field line scoring Jared Weiss and Yenzi, who both singled to reach base. Holderbach's single to center drove in Page and Seamus Kenneally, who reached on a walk.

Pitt Bradford scored two in the bottom of the ninth for the final 10-5 margin.

Yenzi finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two runs batted in to lead the Pioneer attack. Page had the two-run double and Holderbach drove in three runs on the day.

Marietta is back in action Wednesday (March 11) morning. The Pioneers play Ohio Wesleyan at 9 a.m.
