No. 20 Rhodes Sweeps No. 8/15 BSC In Saturday Doubleheader

Birmingham, Ala. - In their third straight weekend competing around Birmingham, Ala., Rhodes College baseball made their first trip to Striplin Field to take on the No. 8/15 ranked Birmingham-Southern College Panthers. Rhodes defeated the BSC 8-4 in game one before taking the second game 8-3. The wins improve the Lynx to 6-3 on the year while BSC is now 8-5 and has lost three straight games.

Game One

The only run in the first five innings of play came from Rhodes junior Wood Kimbrough with a solo homer to lead off the second inning. A Chris Penna singled in Will Heurtin to give Rhodes a 2-0  edge in the sixth until BSC cleared the bases on a double in the bottom half of the inning. The Lynx rallied for five runs in the seventh on three hits, two walks, a sac bunt and a hit by pitch as BSC went through three pitchers in the inning. Scoring continued with a lone run for BSC on an errant throw in the seventh before John McNair doubled in Penna in the ninth. 

Heurtin, Penna, and McNair each tallied two hits in the game. Nathan Mirochnick got the start and struck out four in four innings. Alex Garrett entered the game in the sixth and picked up the win striking out three over two innings. John Fears earned the save, pitching the final two innings.

 

Game Two

BSC opened the game with three runs in the first inning before the Lynx tied the game in the top of the second. Another four runs in the third gave the Lynx a 7-3 advantage after recording five hits in the inning. The final Lynx run came in the fifth on a sac flyout in foul territory. Ben Wilson made a fantastic catch for the Lynx in foul territory to end the game.

Wilson went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI as seven Lynx posted 12 hits. Nick Ferrazi struck out six Panthers in five innings of work for his second win this season.

 

The two squads will first play a seven inning game on Sunday at noon, followed by a regular nine-inning contest to wrap up the weekend.
