ASHLAND, Va. – A walk-off RBI single by sophomore Brooks Mazey (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) capped a five-run rally in the bottom of the seventh in the nightcap as the No. 11 Randolph-Macon baseball team completed a sweep of an ODAC doubleheader against Washington and Lee on Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened: Game 2

  • The Generals scored six in the top of the first to take control early. The Yellow Jackets stranded a pair in the first before getting on the board in the second. Senior Reece Yeargain (Chester, Va./Benedictine) reached on an error and moved to third on a double by senior Jacob Selden (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass). Yeargain scored on a groundout by freshman Grayson Bush (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) and Selden came home on a base hit by senior Ryan Duphorn (Erial, N.J./Paul VI) to make it 6-2.
  • R-MC put two on in the sixth, but a double play ended the frame.
  • With darkness approaching, the Yellow Jackets would rally in the seventh. Junior pinch-hitter JT Fitzpatrick (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) drew a leadoff walk. Freshman pinch-runner Matthew Myers (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) went to second when Duphorn was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a walk to sophomore Ethan Iannuzzi (Chesterfield, Va./Cosby). Myers scored on a deep sacrifice fly to right by senior Mike Nickles (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) to make it 6-3. A single by senior Kevin Mooney (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) plated Duphorn, pulling R-MC within two. Senior Shawn Nickles (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) flew out to left for the second out. Yeargain singled to right, driving in Iannuzzi from third and Mooney from first to tie the game at 6-6. Freshman Myles Webb (Norfolk, Va./Granby) pinch-ran for Yeargain and moved to second on a single by Selden. Mazey's base hit brought in Webb with the game-winning run. The game was halted in the bottom of the seventh due to darkness.

  • Selden went 3 for 4 with a run. Yeargain had two hits and two RBI.
  • Senior Tyler Dunn (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) pitched a perfect top of the seventh to earn his first victory of the season.
  • Senior Zack Radcliffe (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) was a key arm out of the pen, going 4.1 scoreless innings with no walks and three strikeouts.

How It Happened: Game 1

  • The R-MC offense was loud in the opener. The Yellow Jackets scored four in the first without the benefit of a hit. A two-run single by Mooney highlighted a six-run second as the advantage grew to 10-0.
  • Yeargain had an RBI single in a three-run third as R-MC went up 13-0.
  • After the Generals tallied a run in the top of the fifth, Selden and Mazey delivered sacrifice flies in a three-run bottom of the fifth to make it 16-1. The Generals added two in the seventh to make the final 16-3.
