SUNY Oneonta Sweeps Cazenovia

A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader against Cazenovia College Wednesday afternoon with scores of 6-0 and 9-8. The Red Dragons are now 4-0 on the year, while the Wildcats fall to 3-7.

The Inside Story
In the first game, Oneonta southpaw Sean Liquori allowed just one hit over four innings while striking out six Wildcats to earn his first collegiate win. Michael Dunne and Michael Losak closed out the final three innings to preserve the shutout.

The Red Dragons got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the first. With runners on second and third, Jake Barrett plated Michael Sabatine from third with a groundout to short. James Ceparano scampered home from third on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. Oneonta added to their lead in the bottom of the second when Cazenovia pitcher Justin Stump was called for a balk with the bases loaded, allowing Skyler Daniello to score from third. The Red Dragons plated two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 5-0. Liam Kaseta drove in the first run with a single to center, scoring Patrick McGee. With runners on second and third, James Ceparano grounded out to the right side of the infield, scoring Kaseta with Oneonta's fifth run. In the fifth inning James Zupo scored from third on a pass ball for the final run of the game.

In the nightcap, the Red Dragons jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the bottom of the second. Patrick McGee drove in a pair of runs with a double to left centerfield. Liam Kaseta brought home McGee with single through the left side to give Oneonta a 3-0 lead. The Red Dragons increased their lead with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. After Cazenovia got two quick outs to start the inning, Michael Sabatine reached on a throwing error to keep the line moving. The error allowed the speedy Sabatine to make his way to third base. Sean McGlynn made the error hurt with an RBI single to left. James Zupo capped off the inning with an RBI double down the left field line to make the score 5-0.

After Cazenovia scored their first run of the day in the top of the fifth, the Red Dragons responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning to go on top 9-1. With the bases loaded, Patrick McGee earned a walk. Liam Kaseta followed with a sacrifice fly to right, increasing the hosts lead to 7-1. With runners on second and third, Cole Rockwell scored from third on a pass ball before a Sabatine sacrifice fly wrapped up the scoring for Oneonta.

The Wildcats mounted a comeback with six runs in the top of the sixth. Four of the runs came on a pinch-hit grand slam by Cesar Tapia. Cazenovia would load the bases again in the inning, but Michael Losak came in to get the ground out, getting the Red Dragons out of the jam. Cazenovia refused go down quietly as they threaten again in the top of the seventh. After pulling within a run and loading the bases, Losak held on for the save with a game ending strikeout.

Sophomore Logan Carriero earned hist first collegiate win after throwing three hitless innings to start the game. Liam Kaseta finished the day going 3-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored. James Zupo chipped in with three hits and an RBI.

The Red Dragons return to action on Saturday, March 27th when they host Brockport in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00.
