The Basics

Score: #15 Randolph-Macon 10, Lynchburg 1

Site/Venue: Ashland, Va./Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park

Records: R-MC 7-3, 5-0 ODAC; LYN 10-8, 3-2 ODAC

How It Happened

  • After a scoreless first, the Yellow Jackets got on the scoreboard in the second. Yeargain belted a high homer to left, his second of the season, to give R-MC a 1-0 lead. Senior JT Fitzpatrick (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) was hit by a pitch and came home on a double to right center by senior Shawn Nickles (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge). A solid single to center by Bush plated Nickles, making it 3-0. Senior Ryan Duphorn (Erial, N.J./Paul VI) reached on an error, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a homer to left by sophomore Ethan Iannuzzi (Chesterfield, Va./Cosby), his second, to make it 5-0.
  • R-MC batted around again in the third. Yeargain had a leadoff single and moved to second when Fitzpatrick reached on an error. Both scored on a one-out single by Bush as the lead grew to 7-0. Bush scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior Mike Nickles (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) to make it 8-0. Duphorn walked and scored on a wild pitch as the home team led 9-0 after three.
  • After the Hornets tallied a run in the fourth, the Yellow Jackets finished the scoring in the sixth. Junior Will Hass (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) had a one-out single and scored on a two-out double by Yeargain to make the final 10-1.

By The Numbers

  • Senior John Reynolds, Jr. (Bumpass, Va./Louisa) earned his first win of the season, going 5.0 innings with four hits, one run, three walks and two strikeouts.
  • The R-MC defense turned a pair of double plays behind Reynolds. A leadoff walk in the second was erased on a 4-6-3 DP. Lynchburg had two on with one away in the third before a 6-4-3 twin killing thwarted the threat.
  • Three relievers held the Hornets scoreless over the final four frames. Senior RJ Payne (Barboursville, Va./William Monroe) worked 1.1 hitless innings with one walk and one strikeout. Sophomore Lyle Holland (Valdese, N.C./Freedom) allowed one hit and one walk in 1.2 innings with one punchout. Senior Hayden Moore (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) fanned two in a 1-2-3 ninth to finish the game.
  • Duphorn walked once and scored twice. That walk ties him with Billy Jones (1977-79) for the program record for career walks with 101. Duphorn owns program records with 178 runs and 74 stolen bases.
  • R-MC had an error-free effort for the second time in the past three games.
