W&J sweeps Geneva

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The 20th ranked Washington & Jefferson College baseball team traveled to Geneva College for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader on Saturday. The Presidents extended their season-opening win streak to 14 games as W&J collected a doubleheader sweep.

W&J posted an 8-0 win in game one behind a strong pitching performance by junior Henry Litman (Marietta, Ga./Walton). Tyler Horvat (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) allowed just one run in seven innings of game two as the Presidents recorded an 11-2 game two victory.

W&J moves to 14-0 on the season and 11-0 in PAC play. Geneva falls to 5-8 overall, 4-7 PAC. 
 
Game 1 – W&J 8, Geneva 0 
 
Litman improved to 4-0 this season as the junior righty tossed a complete game shutout. Litman struck out eight and walked one. He scattered six Geneva hits. 
 
The W&J offense game Litman an early cushion, as they struck for four runs in the top of the first inning. Horvat led off the game with a triple and scored on an errant throw by the Geneva left fielder. A pair of walks to Nate Rush(Wheeling, W.Va./The Linsly School) and Peter Kalinski (Washington, D.C./Saint John's College) set up the Presidents for more. 
 
Adam Morris (South Park, Pa./South Park) produced an RBI sac fly to make the score 2-0 as Rush scored. Kalinski advanced to third on a single by Adam Moore (Olean, N.Y./Archbishop Walsh) and scored on an error by the Geneva center fielder. Michael Zito (Nashville, Tenn./Hume-Fogg) capped the four-run inning with an RBI single to plate Moore.  
 
The Presidents struck for two more runs in the top of the third to extend the lead to 6-0. Jason Gregovits (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) came through with a two-out two-run single to score Morris and Moore. 
 
Another error, the seventh of the game by Geneva, allowed two more Presidents to score unearned runs in the fifth. That concluded the scoring for both teams. 
 
Offensively, Moore finished with a multi-hit effort in game one for W&J. 
 
 
Game 2 – W&J 11, Geneva 2
 
W&J opened the scoring with five runs in the second inning of game two. Consecutive singles by Moore, Evan Sante(Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) and Zito loaded the bases with no outs. Mike Graziani (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) followed with an RBI single to score Moore. 
 
A fielder's choice groundout by Logan Scheider (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) brought home Sante to give W&J a 2-0 lead. A productive out by Gregovits made it 3-0 when his groundout scored Zito. 
 
A pair of walks reloaded the bases for Morris, who was hit by a pitch, which forced home Scheider to make the score 4-0. A wild pitch scored Rush to extend the lead to 5-0. 

The Presidents added two more runs in the fifth to make it 7-0. Moore walked and stole second before scoring on an RBI single by Zito. Two batters later, Scheider delivered an RBI double to score Zito. 

Kalinski and Morris swatted back-to-back solo home runs over the left field fence in the sixth inning, and Zito singled home Sante to push the W&J lead to 10-0. 

Moore drove in the Presidents' 11th run in the seventh with a snigle. Geneva scored a run in the seventh and one in the ninth as W&J earned the 11-2 victory. 

Horvat allowed just two hits, one earned run and had seven strikeouts in seven innings to collect his third win. 

Johnny Nixon (Darlington, Pa./Blackhawk) threw a scoreless eighth andRyan Rametta (Leechburg, Pa./Kiski Area) pitched the ninth. 

Zito went 4-5 with two runs batted in and two runs scored. Moore had two hits and twice. Kalinski scored twice and homered while Morris homered and drove in a pair of runs. Scheider doubled, drove in a pair and scored a run. Sante scored twice. 

W&J concludes the four-game series with Geneva on Monday, April 5 at Ross Memorial Park. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
