Hampden-Sydney Splits Two Games Against Eastern Mennonite

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Junior Trey Karnes/Mechanicsville had two hits, including a walk-off RBI single in the second game, while senior captain Ryan Clawson/Moseley had two hits and two RBIs in the first game, as Hampden-Sydney College split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball doubleheader against Eastern Mennonite University on Friday on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Sophomore Tymothy Hart/Powhatan gained the pitching win in the thrilling 10-9 come-from-behind nightcap victory that witnessed the home team scoring two runs in the bottom of the ninth, while junior Trenton Tiller/Powhatan took the mound setback in the 6-2 opener for the host Tigers (7-8, 4-6) against the visiting Royals (5-4, 5-4).

In game two, H-SC scored 10 runs on 15 hits with two errors … scoring one run in the second, two in the third, one in the sixth, four in the seventh and two in the decisive ninth. EMU scored nine runs on 13 hits with two errors … scoring two runs in the first, five in the fourth, one in the seventh and one in the ninth.

In the second, Karnes (2-4, RBI) singled to open the at-bat, moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a single by sophomore Jay Beavers/Alexandria (3-5) and scored when the catcher made a throw to second base when Beavers faked a steal attempt. In the third, Hart (1-3) and junior Max Lipscomb/Virginia Beach (1-4) each drew walks and later crossed the plate when sophomore captain Ryan Boyce/Suffolk (1-5, 2 RBI) provided a clutch two-run single down the left field line.

In the sixth, Beavers doubles to left center field with one out and scored on a run-scoring single from senior Matt Muehleck/Martinsville (2-4, 2 RBIs). In the seventh, Lipscomb single to open the at-bat and scored courtesy of an RBI single to the mound by freshman Lucas Burnette/Hurt (2-5, RBI), and Burnette would later cross the plate via a wild pitch. Boyce and Karnes each walked and Boyce also scored on a wild pitch, while Karnes scored on another RBI single by Muehleck.

In the ninth, freshman Trent Jones/Virginia Beach (1-1) singled to right center field to begin the at-bat, moved to second when Muehleck drew a walk, and advanced to third when Lipscomb was intentionally walked to load the bases. Following an out, Boyce reached on a fielding error that allowed Jones to cross the plate with the game-tying run. Karnes provided the excitement with his walk-off RBI single to right center field that scored Muehleck with the game-winning run. Clawson (2-5) added two hits in the second game, as well.

Hart (1-0) pitched the final 2.0 innings for the victory—the first of his collegiate career—scattering three hits and one run, earned, with one strikeout and no walks. Freshman Aidan Williams/Suffolk started and pitched the first 3.0 innings, yielding four hits and two runs, one earned, with one strikeout and two walks. Freshman Bennett Lloyd/Henrico tossed one-third of an inning, allowing four hits and five runs, all earned, with no strikeouts and no walks. Sophomore Davis Ferguson/Rocky Mount pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, yielding one hit with two strikeouts and no walks. Freshman Ethan Snyder/Bumpass tossed a scoreless inning, allowing no hits with no strikeouts and two walks. Sophomore Declan Kent/Charlottesville pitched 1.0 inning, allowing one hit and one run, earned, with no strikeouts and no walks.

In game one, H-SC scored two runs on five hits with two errors … scoring both runs in the fifth. EMU scored six runs on nine hits with no errors … scoring one run in the first, two in the third, two in the eighth and one in the ninth.

In the fifth, Lipscomb (1-4) walked with one out and advanced to third on a double to right field by Burnette (1-3), and both crossed the plate courtesy of a two-run double down the right field line from Clawson (2-3, 2 RBIs).

Tiller (0-3) started and pitched the first 8.0 innings, scattering eight hits and five runs, four earned, with six strikeouts and no walks. Freshman Ryan Portes/Midlothian pitched the final 1.0 inning, allowing one hit and one run, earned, with no strikeouts and no walks.

H-SC is scheduled to play at home again on Sunday, April 4, hosting ODAC opponent Guilford (NC) College for a doubleheader at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium beginning at 12 p.m.
