A Quick Look

The SUNY Oneonta baseball team split their SUNYAC doubleheader against New Paltz Tuesday afternoon at Loren Campbell Memorial Field. The Red Dragons used extra innings to hold on for a 7-6 win in the first game before dropping the nightcap 4-3. Oneonta is now 8-4 overall and 3-3 in the SUNYAC.

 

The Inside Story

In game one, Oneonta jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first. With a pair of runners in scoring position, James Zupo laced a double, scoring Michael Sabatine with the first run of the ballgame. Jake Barrett capped off the inning by driving in two runs with a single to left.

 

In the bottom of the third, Jake Barrett got the inning started with a one-out double. Barrett then stole third base, but the attempt to throw him out sailed into the outfield, allowing Barrett to score Oneonta's fourth run of the game. Oneonta increased their lead in the top of the fifth when Patrick McGee manufactured his own run with two outs. After reaching base on single, McGee then stole second base. He then stole third base, but the catcher's attempt to throw him out got away, allowing him to trot home to make it 5-0. Oneonta increased their lead to 6-0 in the top of the seventh on a Michael Sabatine RBI single.

 

Oneonta starting pitcher Sean Liquori was throwing a no-hitter through six and a third innings before Dean Stalzer smacked a solo homerun over the left field fence. New Paltz would cut the deficit to 6-2 on a Nick Harvey RBI single to center.

 

New Paltz would tie the game and send it extra innings with four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. In the top of the 12th inning, Oneonta would take the lead for good when James Zupo scored from third on a wild pitch. Freshman Michael Sadowski was able to get Matthew McGee to line out to short with two runners on in the bottom of the 12th to earn his first collegiate win. Sadwoski and Liquori combined for 16 strikeouts in the game. Matthew McAllister was 4-for-7 in the game with a run scored. Michael Sabatine added three hits, while James Ceparano and Jake Barrett had two hits apiece.

 

In game two, New Paltz jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the bottom of the first. The Hawks got on the board when they executed a double steal with runners on the corners. Matthew McGee made it 2-0 with an RBI double.

 

The Red Dragons tied the game with a pair of runs in the top of the second. With runners on the corners, Patrick McGee grounded out to short, scoring Sean Liquori from third. Liam Kaseta followed with an RBI single to center, scoring McGee to knot the game at 2-2.

 

In the top of the fifth, Liam Kaseta started the inning with a triple. Sean McGlyn gave Oneonta the lead when he drove in Kaseta with a single to left.

 

The Hawks got a clutch two-run homerun from Nick Harvey in the bottom of the sixth to go in front 4-3. New Paltz senior pitcher Anthony Amoroso retired the Red Dragons in order in the top of the seventh to earn the complete game victory.

 

Logan Carriero suffered the loss for Oneonta after allowing four runs on eight hits in six innings of work. Liam Kaseta paced the Oneonta offense with two of their eight hits in the game.

The Red Dragons return to action on Saturday, April 17th when they travel to Cortland for a SUNYAC doubleheader beginning at noon.
