No. 10 W&J earns series victory with split at Chatham

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The No. 10 Washington & Jefferson College baseball team had its school-record 22-game season-opening win streak halted in the Presidents' doubleheader split at Chatham on Sunday afternoon.
 
The Presidents now stand at 23-1 on the season and 17-1 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play. Chatham moves to 7-15 overall and 6-11 in league play.
 
Game One – Chatham 4, W&J 3
 
The Cougars held the Presidents to a season-low three runs in W&J's first loss of 2021. Chatham's Erik Napolitano relieved starter Dominic Costellic in the fifth inning with the Presidents leading 3-1 and didn't surrender a run the rest of the way.
 
Chatham led 1-0 with a run in the bottom of the first before W&J responded with three runs in the fifth. Adam Morris(South Park, Pa./South Park), Adam Moore (Olean, N.Y./Archbishop Walsh) and Michael Zito (Nashville, Tenn./Hume-Fogg) each rapped two-out run-scoring hits to put W&J ahead 3-1. Napolitano entered the game and recorded the inning's final out.
 
Chatham tied the game at three in the bottom of the sixth. A single, a walk and a pair of stolen bases put runners on second and third with one out. The Cougars smacked a pair of RBI singles to chase started Nick Drake(Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillian) and tie the game at three.
 
W&J placed at least one runner on base in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, but could not find a fourth run. Chatham scored on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth and kept W&J off the board in the ninth to record the win.
 
Drake allowed nine hits and three earned runs in 5.2 innings of work. He struck out five and issues one walk. Kamden Kautz (Oro Valley, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge) pitched 2.1 innings in relief and allowed one earned run on one hit.
 
Morris and Peter Kalinski (Washington, D.C./St. John's College) each had two hits. Moore had a triple.
 
 
Game Two – W&J 9, Chatham 2
 
The Presidents posted big second and sixth innings to avenge their game one defeat.
 
W&J scored four runs in the top of the second inning. Luke Virag (New Kensington, Pa./Burrell) scored on a passed ball, Roman Samson (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) scored on a sacrifice fly and Moore doubled home Tyler Horvat(Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) and Kalinski.
 
Chatham cut the W&J lead to 4-2 with a two-out two-run single in the third.
 
The Presidents added five runs in the top of the sixth. W&J scored on an error, Morris and Moore each smacked RBI triples and Moore scored on a passed ball.
 
Shane Fox (Valencia, Pa./Mars Area) earned the win for W&J. He allowed two earned runs over five innings with four strikeouts. Mason Kolbe (Bradenton, Fla./Out-of-Door Academy) worked two scoreless innings.
 
Horvat went 4-for-4 with two runs scored. Moore had two hits, a double, triple and three RBI.
 
 
The Presidents take on Franciscan in a four-game series next weekend.
