Hampden-Sydney Falls At Nationally-Ranked No. 14 Randolph-Macon 14-8

ASHLAND, Va. – Junior Max Lipscomb/Virginia Beach and sophomore captain Ryan Boyce/Suffolk each had two hits and two RBIs, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 14-8 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball decision on the road at nationally-ranked No. 14 Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday in Ashland. Freshman Aidan Williams/Suffolk took the pitching setback for the visiting Tigers (14-10, 9-8 ODAC), who rallied from an early 10-0 deficit to within 10-8 in the eighth inning, against their archival and host Yellow Jackets (18-6, 15-2 ODAC).

H-SC scored eight runs on 13 hits with six errors … scoring one run in the fifth inning, one run in the sixth and six runs in the eighth. R-MC had 14 runs on 12 hits with four errors … scoring one run in the first inning, nine runs in the fourth, two runs in the seventh and two runs in the eighth.

In the fifth, senior captain Nick Grohowski/Chesterfield (3-5, RBI) singled through the left side to open the at-bat and later scored with two outs when Lipscomb (2-5, 2 RBIs) delivered a run-scoring single to left field.

In the sixth, senior captain Ryan Clawson/Moseley (1-3) tripled to left center field to open the inning and promptly crossed the plate on an RBI ground ball by Boyce (2-5, 2 RBIs).

In the eighth, Clawson walked to lead-off and advanced to both second and third base via separate wild pitches, and scored courtesy of a ground-rule RBI double to right field by freshman Tillman Butler/Culpeper (2-5, RBI). Butler crossed the plate when sophomore Jay Beavers/Alexandria (2-5) reached on an infield single that involved a throwing error on the play, and Beavers scored when Grohowski followed with another ground-rule RBI double to right field. Grohowski crossed the plate on yet another run-scoring double to right field, this time off the bat of senior captain Matt Muehleck/Martinsville (1-3, RBI), and Muehleck scored on an RBI single to left field by Lipscomb—Lipscomb later crossing the plate on an RBI infield single by Boyce.

Grohowski continued with his hot bat of late and is now 10-13 (.769) at the plate with eight RBIs in the last three games for the Tigers.

Williams (1-2) started and pitched the first 3.2 innings, allowing 10 hits and 10 runs, three earned, with no strikeouts and two walks. Junior Kieran Conway/Chesapeake tossed 1.1 scoreless innings, yielding one hit with no strikeouts and two walks, as well. Freshman Ryan Portes/Midlothian tossed a scoreless inning, yielding one hit with no strikeouts and one walk. Sophomore Tymothy Hart/Powhatan pitched 1.0 inning, allowing no hits and two runs, both unearned, with no strikeouts and no walks. Freshman Ethan Snyder/Bumpass faced four batters, allowing no hits and two runs, both earned, with one strikeout and two walks. Sophomore Owen Tappy/Charlotte, NC pitched the final 1.0 scoreless inning, yielding no hits with one strikeout and no walks.

H-SC is scheduled to play on the road again this weekend at Bridgewater College on Sunday, April 25, a conference doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. in Bridgewater.
