A Quick Look

The SUNY Oneonta baseball team split their SUNYAC doubleheader with SUNY Cortland Saturday afternoon at Robert H. Wallace Field. Oneonta dropped the first game 22-1 before taking the night cap 2-1. The win was Oneonta's first regular season victory over Cortland since April 10, 2016.

The Inside Story

In game one, Cortland pounded out 28 hits while Oneonta could only muster five. Oneonta scored their lone run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Jake Barrett. Matthew Petrossi suffered his first loss of the season after allowing five runs in two and a third innings.

In the nightcap, Oneonta rode another strong pitching performance by Sean Liquori. The sophomore southpaw improved his record to 4-0 on the year after scattering four hits and one run in five and two-thirds innings. Senior closer Michael Losak earned his fourth save of the season after getting the final four outs of the game.

With a runner on and two out in the top of the first, Jake Barrett delivered a double to right centerfield, scoring Sean McGlynn with the first run of the game. Oneonta added to their lead in the top of the third on another two-out RBI by Jake Barrett. After Sean McGlynn earned a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch, Jake Barrett hit an RBI single to right to give Oneonta a 2-0 advantage.

Cortland finally got to Sean Liquori in the bottom of the sixth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Mat Bruno hit a sacrifice fly to right, pulling Cortland within a run. Michael Losak came in and struck out Ben Rhodes looking, stranding the tying run 90 feet away.

Cortland threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh. After Adam Michaelski earned a four pitch walk to start the inning. Michaelski then stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, putting the tying run just 90 feet away with one out. Losak got the second out of the inning when he struck out Paul Franzese. After a walk and a stolen base by Colin BeVard put the winning run in scoring position, Losak struck out Scott Giordano to end the game.

"I am proud of the guys response in the second game. The grit and fight in this group is something special", said head coach Ben Grimm. "It takes a full team effort to win games in the SUNYAC and that's what the guys came together to do to finish the day."
