Offense stays hot as No. 6 W&J sweeps Thiel

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The No. 6 ranked Washington & Jefferson College baseball team completed a four-game sweep of Thiel College with two wins Sunday at Tomcat Park in Mercer County. W&J racked up 29 more runs during the doubleheader. The Presidents won 17-2 in game one and then added a 12-2 victory in the nightcap. 

W&J improves to 23-1 in PAC play and 31-1 overall in 2021. Thiel drops to 8-16 in league games and 12-18 overall. 

The Presidents scored in double digits in each of the four games against the Tomcats. W&J totaled 56 runs during the series.

Game One – W&J 17, Thiel 2
 
The Presidents rolled to a 17-2 victory over the Tomcats in the nine-inning PAC game. W&J scored in double figures for a seventh straight game, as they tallied 17 runs on 15 hits in the opener. 
 
Thiel opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the second inning. A two-out RBI double plated the initial run of the game to give the Tomcats a 1-0 edge.
 
The lead was short lived as W&J responded quickly with two runs in the top of the third inning. A double by Logan Scheider (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) and a single by Tyler Horvat (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) helped W&J load the bases in the frame. A two-run single by Peter Kalinski (Washington, D.C./Saint John's College) gave W&J a 2-1 lead over Thiel after three. 
 
The Presidents took command of the game in the fourth inning. W&J pushed across seven runs on five hits in the frame to extend the lead to 9-1. Michael Zito (Nashville, Tenn./Hume-Fogg) and Nate Rush (Wheeling, W.Va./The Linsly School) draw back-to-back walks to open the inning. Two batters later, Scheider drove in both runners with a two-run double. A single by Jason Gregovits (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) placed runners on the corners for Horvat. 

Horvat delivered a three-run home run to score Scheider and Gregovits. His his second home run of the series stretched the W&J lead to 7-1. W&J tacked on two more runs to lead by eight after the fourth.
 
Seven more runs came across for W&J in the top of the fifth inning extended the lead to 16-1. A two-run single by Kalinski scored Scheider and Horvat to swell the lead to 10. Adam Moore (Olean, N.Y./Archbishop Walsh) added a two-run double two batters later to make it 13-1. 
 
In the sixth inning, an RBI double by Tony Tamilia (Coraopolis, Pa./Moon) scored Kalinski for the Presidents' 17th run of the game. 
 
Scheider finished with four hits, three runs scored and two doubles. Kalinski had three hits, four RBI and three runs scored. Adam Morris (South Park, Pa./South Park) and Horvat recorded two hits apiece.
 
Nick Drake (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) improved to 6-0 in 2021 by tossing 5.0 innings to record the victory. Drake scattered five hits and struck out six. 
 
Ryan Rametta (Leechburg, Pa./Kiski Area), Jonathan Haines (Arkport, N.Y./Arkport) and Jameson Campbell(Painesville, Ohio/Painesville Riverside) all tossed a scoreless inning of relief out of the bullpen. 
 
Game Two – W&J 12, Thiel 2
 
A 10-run sixth inning was the difference for W&J in game two. With the score tied at 1-1, the Presidents exploded for 10 runs on six hits in the frame. The big hit in the inning came from Roman Samson (Tampa, Pa./Berkeley Prep). Samson crushed a three-run home run over the left field fence. 
 
Following a pair of scoreless innings, an RBI double in the third by Kalinski plated Scheider to give W&J the first run of the game. A solo home run by Thiel's Trey Williams in the bottom of the third tied the score at 1-1. 
 
With the scored tied, the Tomcats put a pair of runners on base in the bottom of the fourth inning. However, Mason Kolbe (Bradenton, Fla./Out-of-Door Academy) entered from the bullpen and recorded the third out to keep the score deadlocked. 
 
A pair of defensive miscues by the Presidents gave the Tomcats another chance to push across a potential go-ahead run. However, Kolbe again escaped unscathed. 
 
The first five Presidents reached base in the top of the sixth. Tamilia led off the inning the inning with a pinch hit single. Back-to-back sac bunt attempts resulted in a pair of errors for Thiel. Those miscues loaded the bases for the Presidents with no outs. 
 
Scheider gave W&J the lead for good with an RBI single that scored Nicholas Krugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton LaSalle). Horvat and Moore added two-run hits in the inning. 
 
Later in the inning, Samson hammered his second home run of the series to extend the W&J lead to 10-1. 
 
Scheider tacked on his second hit of the sixth inning, as his RBI double scored Campbell to make it 11-1. A sacrifice fly by Luke Virag (New Kensington, Pa./Burrell) plated the game's final run in the seventh.  
 
Kolbe tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless relief to earn his second victory of the season. 
 
Scheider added three more hits in game two. He racked up seven hits during Sunday's doubleheader. Samson recorded three hits, three RBI and two runs scored. 
 
Horvat, and Kalinski registered two hits each during game two.
