Keystone Opens 2022 With 6-2 Win Over W&L

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - The Keystone College baseball team opened up the 2022 campaign with a 6-2 victory over Washington & Lee University in the D3 Showcase on Friday evening at Atrium Health Ballpark.

The Giants start the year at 1-0 and will take on No. 3 Marietta College (0-1) tomorrow at 10 a.m. followed by a 6 p.m. tilt against Christopher Newport University (4-4).

The season-opening tournament is being hosted by the Kannapolis Cannonballers, the Low-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox.

Senior right-hander Nathan Hinkley (Bradenton, Fla./Saint Lucie West Centennial) earned the opening day start and tossed six innings, allowing four hits and one earned run while striking out four and walking one. Hinkley tossed 85 pitches and forced nine flyouts and five groundouts.

The Generals (4-3) jumped on the board early on, taking a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Keystone responded with six unanswered runs in the third and fourth frames.

Offensively, Keystone enjoyed eight hits as Chris Hadsall (Lehman, Pa./Lake Lehman) and RJ Gouldsbury (Throop, Pa./Mid Valley) each went 2-for-4, combining for three RBI. Hadsall notched a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the fourth while Gouldsbury tallied a two-run double that dropped into left field in the third.

Adam Kelly (Beach Lake, Pa./Honesdale) drove in a pair of runs while Vince Montone (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Township) picked up one RBI. Derrick Cancel (Orlando, Fla./Chancery Charter) and Bobby Pokorney (Margate, Fla./J.P. Taravella) enjoyed base hits, and JD Barret (Moosic, Pa./Dallas)t earned two walks and scored once.

Nick Termini (Clark Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) appeared in the seventh and tossed three scoreless innings to earn his first save of the year and allowed just one hit while striking out two. 

Termini threw 33 pitches in relief with four groundouts and three flyouts, including a flyout to center to seal the victory.
