KANNAPOLIS, N.C. -- Christopher Newport got another terrific start from junior lefty Dylan Weber (1-0) on Saturday evening as the southpaw struck out 10 and got the win against Keystone College (1-2) in the D3 Showcase. The Captains (5-4) won the matchup against the Giants, receiving votes in the D3baseball.com Top 25, by a final score of 9-1.

Additionally, Sunday's finale against Washington & Lee University was cancelled due to expected rainfall in the area. The Captains wrapped up a successful trip to Kannapolis, N.C. by posting a 2-0 record against No. 3 Marietta and Keystone at the home of Chicago White Sox minor league affiliate the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers

The Captains roped five extra-base hits including a pair of doubles by Scott Crosson, who finished the day with a 4-for-5 performance hitting out of the two hole. In the Showcase, Crosson finished 6-for-8 with three runs scored and three RBI to lead the CNU offense.

Jumping on Keystone early, Christopher Newport scored three runs in the bottom of the first to stake Weber to more than enough runs for the victory. Crosson got things started with a one-out single followed by another base hit from Kyle Schofield. With two on, Justin Bowers split the gap in right center field with a blistering shot that reached the wall. He plated a pair with his team-leading seventh extra-base hit of the season. Rookie Kevin Mackmin stepped in two batters later and drove in Bowers with a base hit into center field.

With a 3-0 lead, Weber worked around limited issues through the first four frames. He struck out a pair in the first and another couple in the second inning to get out of a jam. In the fifth inning, Weber picked up his seventh strikeout and a groundball out to get two quick outs, but a double and a single scored the first run for Keystone. The Captains' starter recuperated though, stranding the second runner with his eighth punchout

Weber finished out his performance with two more clean frames in the sixth and seventh. After a lead-off walk in the seventh, the southpaw struck out two more before a fly ball to right field wrapped up his effort with just six hits scattered over 7.0 innings pitched and one run allowed.

In relief of the starter, Danny Checkosky came on in the eighth and then gave way to Kyle Lewis. Lewis was terrific, stranding the two baserunners he inherited with a strikeout and a flyout to right field. In the ninth, Lewis struck out two more and finished up the game with a groundball to short.

CNU scored a run in the fourth when Jonathan Fisher trotted home on an error and the Captains tacked on two more in the fifth. Mackmin walked to lead off and raced home on an RBI double by Jay Cassady. Fisher then plated Cassady with a sacrifice fly later in the inning. After Crosson doubled to lead off the sixth, he came into score his second run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Daniel Elliott.

Finally, two more runs came across in the bottom of the eighth. Alec Reilly led off the frame with a pinch-hit triple followed by a pinch hit walk by Michael Martorano. Reilly scored on a failed pickoff attempt and Martorano scored on a passed ball.

The Captains will next head to Myrtle Beach, S.C. to face Hanover College on Tuesday, March 1. They will also take on Cabrini University on Wednesday, March 2 and Neumann University on March 3.
