Hampden-Sydney Falls At Christopher Newport 17-3

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Senior Ethan Badin (Richmond) had three hits, including his first collegiate home run, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 17-3 non-conference baseball decision at Christopher Newport University on Monday in Newport News. Sophomore Tillman Butler (Culpeper) also had three hits and an RBI, while freshman Justin Reynolds (Virginia Beach took the pitching setback for the visiting Tigers (6-4) against the host Captains (10-4).

H-SC scored three runs on 13 hits with four errors … scoring one run in the first inning and two runs in the eighth. CNU scored 17 runs on 14 hits with one error … scoring two runs in the first inning, six runs in the sixth, four runs in the seventh and five runs in the eighth.

Highlights included a 3-4 effort at the plate by Badin, who slammed his first career home run (to left field) on the first pitch of the game, adding a double for H-SC. Butler was also 3-4 with one RBI on the day, including a run-scoring single in the eighth, while sophomore Trent Jones (Virginia Beach) (1-2, RBI) added an RBI single in the eighth, as well, for the Tigers. Senior captain Trey Karnes (Mechanicsville) (2-3) and freshman Matthew Arnold (Danville) (2-5) each collected two hits.

Reynolds (0-1) started and pitched the first 3.2 innings, yielding four hits and two runs, both earned, with three strikeouts and four walks for the Garnet & Grey. Junior Davis Ferguson (Rocky Mount) was among the seven pitchers used by the visitors … recording a scoreless inning among six batters faced, allowing no hits with one strikeout and three walks.

H-SC will next play on the road at Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opponent Ferrum College on Saturday, March 12, at 3:30 p.m.—an updated starting time for game one of the doubleheader in Ferrum on Saturday. In addition, a previously scheduled non-conference game at the University of Mary Washington on Wednesday, March 9, in Fredericksburg has been canceled due to the forecasted rain on Wednesday.
