Messiah’s ninth inning comeback downs Blazers 10-7

FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College baseball team dropped its Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth opener against Messiah University 10-7.

 At the Plate

  • James DeProspero led Hood at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and scored twice. 

  • Tyler Schwarzman recorded two RBIs in the game.

  • Joe Monteleone and Jacob Saylor each had an RBI. 

On the Mound

  • Dutch DeProspero started the game for the Blazers, allowing two runs on seven hits in 7.1 innings of work. He struck out five and walked two.

  • Four relievers pitched the remainder of the eighth and ninth. Gabe Rivera followed Colby Childs and Trey Baker and took the loss, allowing two runs on two hits in the ninth. Cole Whitton finished the ninth inning, allowing two runs on five hits..  

 Messiah 10, Hood 7

  • Messiah jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. Dustin Isanogle reached on an error by AJ Haines. Later Kasey Caras doubled to score Isanogle. Messiah led 1-0 after the first inning, as Hood went 1-2-3 in the bottom half of the inning.

  • Hood struck back in the second inning tying up the game, following a Sam Wheeler single. James DeProspero doubled into the left field gap to bring Wheeler home from first base.

  • The Falcons took the lead back in the fourth inning. Joshua Ammons and Evan Wagaman reached on walks. Jarrett Gordon later singled and knocked in Ammons from second. Dutch DeProspero worked his way out of a bases-loaded jam to keep the Falcons lead to 2-1. 

  • The Blazers took their first lead of the game in the bottom half of the fourth inning. Matthew Stout led off the inning with a walk, Stephen Sommer singled and James DeProspero was hit by a pitch to load-up the bases. Monteleone scored Stout on a throwing error by Ammons to tie up the game. Later in the inning, Schwarzman singled to score DeProspero andSommer. On the same play Schwarzman caught the Falcons off-guard and took off for second. The throw to second sailed into the outfield, allowing Haines to take third and Monteleone to score  to take a 5-2 lead.

  • Monteleone singled to lead off the sixth inning for the Blazers. After being moved over to third base, he came home on a balk by Messiah's pitcher Nathan Stein to extend the lead to four.

  • Messiah started its comeback in the eighth inning, as Caras led off with a single. Following an Ammons walk, Caras was thrown out trying to steal third by Saylor for the second out of the inning. Clayton Roberts later doubled to bring in Ammons to cut Hood's lead to 6-3. 

  • The Blazers would get that run back in the bottom half of the eighth inning, as DeProspero doubled to start the inning and later scored on a base hit by Saylor to put Hood in front 7-3. 

  • Messiah's offense came alive in the ninth inning scoring seven runs on eight hits. The inning started as Reed Wagner walked, stole second and reached third on a wild pitch. Wagner was brought in by an Isanogle double and Isaiah Zercher reached on an error by AJ Haines in the next at-bat. Caras doubled to score both Isanogle and Zercher to get the Falcons within one run. Mason Valentino traded places with Caras as he doubled  to tie the game up at seven. Pinch runner JasonJohnson was brought home by a Roberts triple to give Messiah its first lead since a 2-1 advantage in the fourth inning. The Falcons hit four straight singles scoring two more runs. Wagaman knocked in Roberts on one and Wagner drove in Wagaman for the final run.                

For the Opponent 

  • Caras led the Falcons at the plate with two doubles, going 4-for-5 with three RBIs.

  • Isanogle went 3-for-6 with a double, two RBIs, two stolen bases and scored twice. 

  • Roberts finished the afternoon with a triple and a double, recording two RBIs.

  • Valentino and Ammons eacha doubled in the game.

  • Wagner had two stolen bases.

  • Kenny Runkel received the win in two innings of relief, allowing a run on two hits. He also struck out three in his outing.

  • Nathan Stein started the game for Messiah, allowing six runs on five hits, he also struck out six. 

  • Noah Barrall recorded the save for the Falcons, sending the Blazers down in order.  

Notes

  • Hood falls to 7-16 overall and 0-1 in the MAC Commonwealth on the year.  

  • Messiah improved to 11-10 and 1-0.
