SALISBURY, Md. – The 11th-ranked Salisbury University baseball team brought out the big bats and scored its most runs in a game in six years, demolishing the St. Mary's (Md.) Seahawks, 28-6, on Wednesday afternoon at Sea Gull Baseball Stadium.

BOX SCORE

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Sea Gulls pounced on a wild Seahawk starter in the first. Jace Jett walked two batters and plunked another, loading the bases before hitting the showers. Stephen Rice cashed in with a two-run single up the middle, then Sky Rahill brought home another with a run-scoring double play that put SU on top 3-0.
  • Salisbury tacked one on in the third thanks to a pair of Seahawk miscues. Dom Frigiola reached on a dropped third strike to lead off, then Kavi Caster walked and the runners executed a double steal. After Frigiola was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a Rice grounder to third, Caster and Rice advanced on a passed ball. Rahill then drove in Caster sharp groundout, making it 4-0.
  • In the fourth, Adam Tommer led off with a single, then Jacob Ference walked and the two stole their ways into scoring position. Luke Weddell then muscled a single through the right side to plate Tommer, and Cameron Hyder was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Frigiola came up next and hit a grounder that ate up third base, allowing Ference to score, then Caster poked a two-run single up the middle to boost the lead to 8-0.
  • The Sea Gulls sent 15 men to the plate and put up a nine-spot in the fifth, scoring their runs on a Hyder RBI double, Caster two-run single, Rice RBI triple, Rahill run-scoring single, Ethan DeRegis RBI triple, Tommer RBI single, Weddell run-scoring base knock and Hyder RBI single to make it 17-0.
  • Ben Anderson's RBI groundout gave SU one more in the sixth, pushing the lead to 18-0.
  • Eight more came in in the seventh on a Rahill single-plus error which scored three, a Josh Barke RBI single, Weddell run-scoring error, Hyder RBI single, Trent Saunders bases-loaded walk and Joey Bowers RBI fielder's choice to make it 26-0.
  • The Seahawks broke up the shutout with three runs in the top of the eighth, the first coming in on an RBI double by Dan Weeden. The Sea Gulls answered with a pair in the bottom of the eighth as Rahill and DeRegis each scored on wild pitches, making it 28-3.
  • Adrian Auber's three-run homer in the top of the ninth gave the game its final 28-6 margin.
