Play Suspended in Game Two Between Wolves and Soaring Eagles

CORNING, N.Y. — Nine innings wasn't enough between Keuka College and Elmira College in game two of their doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

Play was suspended due to darkness following the 12th inning with the score tied 8-8. Hosts Elmira College won the opening game 8-7 over Keuka College (5-7, 0-1 Empire 8) 8-7 at Corning Community College.

Keuka College took the lead in the second inning as Nick Boyle (Chenango Forks, N.Y. / Chenango Forks) scored on a wild pitch. Keuka added to their lead an inning later on a Josh Tyron (Elmira, N.Y. / Thomas A. Edison) sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. However, the Soaring Eagles had a pair of run-scoring singles in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game. Elmira would then take the lead in the fifth inning.

The lead quickly swung back in the favor of the Wolves in the sixth. Ryan Seales (Saratoga Springs, N.Y. / Saratoga Springs) led the inning off with a single. He then moved to third on a double by Tryon. That brought RJ Murphy (Syracuse, N.Y. / West Genesee) to the plate and he delivered with a single up the middle to score two and give Keuka the lead back. The Wolves added to their lead later in the inning on a wild pitch. And then, Tyler Lewandowski (Milltown, N.J. / Spotswood) and Donald Nemeth (Guilderland, N.Y. / Guilderland) each had an RBI double as the Wolves pushed their lead to 7-3.

Elmira wasted no time responding. They match Keuka's five runs from the top of the sixth with five of their own in the bottom, to take an 8-7 lead into the final inning.

Keuka College would push the game-tying run to third base with two outs, but the Soaring Eagles got a strikeout to win game one 8-7.

Lead Wolf: Ryan Seales had a multi-hit game for Keuka College and stole a base. It was his fifth multi-hit game of the season.

Keuka College 8 at Elmira College 8 – Play suspended following 12 innings

The Wolves took advantage of a two-out walk in the first inning and instantly scored on a triple by Josh Tryon. Elmira tied the game in the third, but the Wolves responded in the fourth. Nick Boyle singled home a run and then Matt Vaccaro (Fayetteville, N.Y. / Fayetteville-Manlius) doubled home a pair of runs as Keuka took a 4-1 lead.

Elmira College got one back in the fourth and then tied the game in the fifth. The Soaring Eagles hit a solo home run in the sixth inning to take a 5-4 lead.

Keuka College took advantage of an error in the seventh to tie the game. Josh Tryon then doubled home Nick Brown (Liverpool, N.Y. / Liverpool) to give the Wolves a 6-45 lead.

The advantage was short-lived as an RBI single for Elmira tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. Keuka College would threaten in the top of the ninth, loading the bases with one out, but a double play ended the inning. The game would go to extras.

Nick Brown led off the top of the 11th for the Wolves with a single. He moved up on a bunt and scored on a single by Josh Tryon. Tryon would later score on a wild pitch as the Wolves took an 8-6 lead.

In the bottom of the inning, Elmira got a one-out triple and scored on a single by the next batter to cut the margin to one. Then with two outs, a single up the middle tied the game at 8-8. A strikeout by Spencer Brown (Feura Bush, N.Y. / Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) ended the inning with the game-winning run on third.

Elmira again threatened in the 12th, getting the winning run to third with one out, but Brown got a pair of strikeouts. Following the 12th, the game was suspended due to darkness.

  • Keuka College is now 6-5-1 all-time against Elmira College. The Wolves are 2-4-1 on the road and have not won at Elmira since the 2015 season
  • Matt Vaccaro had his career-high eight-game hitting streak snapped in game one. The sophomore has rebounded with a pair of hits in game two
  • Nick Boyle is currently sitting on a career-best four-hit game in game two against Elmira
  • Keuka College is looking to snap its three-game losing streak in extra innings
  • Playing 12 full innings, it is the third-most ever played in a game in program history, and host since a 13-inning game against Penn State Berks in 2016

Up Next for Keuka College: Both teams have a day off to rest before resuming on Monday. The day will start with the conclusion of today's game two. The Wolves and Soaring Eagles will then continue their season series with a 7-9 doubleheader at Finger Lakes Community College.
