Baseball Hands No. 17/5 Arcadia First Conference Loss

HOBOKEN, Pa. (April 8, 2022)  – Graduate student Hunter Silvernail homered twice, first-year Jordan Fisse and two relievers combined on a five-hitter and the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team snapped No. 17/5 Arcadia University's 12-game winning streak with a 5-4 victory Friday in a MAC Freedom matchup at Dobbelaar Field.

Graduate student Thomas Paulich homered and junior Ben Tobio had two hits and stole a base for the Ducks, who won their sixth straight to improve to 20-7 on the year and to 8-2 in conference play. The victory moved Stevens to the 20-win threshold for the eighth time under 11th-year head coach Kristaps Aldins

Justin Massielo scored twice and Trey Obarowski had a sacrifice fly for the Knights, who fell to 22-4 on the year and to 9-1 in league play. Stevens has won each of the last two meetings between the teams.

"Very nice win today, but the job is not even close to being done," head coach Kristaps Aldins said. "We'll have one day of team training tomorrow sandwiched between today and Sunday's doubleheader. I feel we got better today and that's what we need to do each and every day."

"Hats off to Jacob Buurman for persevering and battling out of a tough jam to save Jordan Fisse's win," Aldins continued. "Hunter Silvernail took some great swings today to lead our offensive attack."

Senior Brett Mendez singled off Hunter Curley (3-2) and moved to second on Tobio's infield single. After a lineout, Silvernail drove Curley's 1-1 pitch well over the right center field wall for his fourth longball of the year. Paulich added to the Ducks' lead four pitches later, easily clearing the right field wall for his third homer of the year. The Lafayette, New Jersey native added a solo blast to right center for his first career multi-homer game. Silvernail has hit all five of his collegiate homers in a Stevens uniform.

Staked with a lead, Fisse (4-1) held the high-powered Arcadia offense in check, allowing two earned runs on three hits to win his second straight start. The right-hander walked just one and struck out two. The Knights entered the contest averaging nine runs on just under 12 hits per contest over their 12-game winning streak.

Arcadia threatened to reclaim the lead in the eighth. Massielo walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. Matt Donchez walked and Aldins turned to sophomore Jacob Buurman. The hard-throwing right-hander induced a lineout and then Tobio nabbed Donchez trying to steal second. Massielo scampered home on the play, with Donchez's caught stealing negating the stolen base attempt. Buurman struck out two in the ninth to pick up his fourth save.

Although Arcadia leads the conference in stolen bases by a wide margin, it was Stevens that freely moved around the bases, going 4 for 4 on stolen base attempts. Mendez joined senior Ryan Finegan, junior Michael Reyes and first-year Evan Pravato in stealing a base.

Up Next: Baseball heads to Glenside, Pennsylvania on Sunday, Apr. 10 for a doubleheader with Arcadia to close out the teams' three-game series.
