W&J dominates Waynesburg in Sunday sweep

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team continued to have its way with Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Waynesburg University. The Presidents rolled to a doubleheader sweep Sunday, as the Red and Black claimed game one by a 15-1 score before coasting to an 11-1 victory in game two.

W&J has won 14 straight in the head-to-head series with the local rival. The Presidents have won every meeting with the Yellow Jackets since the start of the 2017 season. 

W&J extends its current overall winning streak to 10 games. The Presidents are 9-0 in PAC play and 16-6 overall. Waynesburg drops to 7-15 overall and 3-7 in conference games.

Game 1: W&J 15, Waynesburg 1

Serving as the away team in game one due to a schedule game, the Presidents wasted little time in taking control. W&J pushed seven runs across on four hits in the opening frame. The Presidents took advantage of two defensive miscues by Waynesburg. The Yellow Jackets pitchers hit three batters in the disastrous top of the first. Waynesburg starter Joe Sabolek didn't make it out of the inning, as he recorded just two outs and gave up seven runs (two earned) on four hits. 

Tyler Horvat (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) led off the game with a single to set the tone of things to come. A ground-rule double by Roman Samson (Tampa, Fla./Berkley Prep) scored Evan Sante (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) and Peter Kalinski(Washington, D.C./Saint John's College) home to highlight the seven-run inning. Horvat collected his second hit of the opening inning, a two-out RBI single to score Jacob LaDuca (Clarence, N.Y./Canisius) and make it 7-0 W&J. 

Joe Lehner (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic) slapped an RBI single that scored Sante to give W&J an 8-0 lead in the fourth.

W&J plated two more runs in the fifth, as Jason Gregovits (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) scored on an RBI single by Kalinski and Nate Rush (Wheeling, W.VA./The Linsly School) scored on a wild pitch. 

The Presidents would add five more runs in the final two innings, as the Red and Black reserves got into the act offensively. Sam Schuster (Fairport Harbor, Ohio/Fairport Harding) and Trevor Dean (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) would each record RBI hits in the sixth while Zach Scherzer (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) would send home the final run in the seventh with an infield single. 

Henry Litman (Marietta, Ga./Walton) improves to 4-2 on the mound for the Presidents. Litman picked up his third straight victory by tossing 6.0 strong innings. Litman finished with six strikeouts and allowed just one unearned run on four hits. 

Horvat led the way offensively with three hits. Connor Helm (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) recorded a multi-hit game off the bench in the 15-hit outburst.


Game 2: W&J 11, Waynesburg 1

Samson helped power W&J to the game two victory. The sophomore outfielder went 4-for-4 at the plate with a home run and four RBI. Samson finished a double shy of hitting for the cycle. 

The Presidents scored first again in game two, as Horvat and Rush opened with back-to-back singles. A two-out RBI single by Samson plated Horvat to give W&J the early 1-0.  The game remained a one-run contest until W&J broke things open with an eight-run fourth inning to take control.

Samson led off the eight-running inning with a solo shot over the left field fence. The home run was the third of the season for Samson.

Later in the inning, Dan Beistel (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) made Waynesburg pay for playing him shallow in center field. Beistel drilled a triple to center field that scored Lehner and LaDuca to make it 4-0. W&J would tally five more runs in the inning, which a pair coming home on a double by LaDuca. 

W&J added two more runs in the fifth inning. Samson tripled home Sante for the Presidents' final run of the day. 

Jameson Campbell (Painesville, Ohio/Painesville Riverside) was lights out again. The senior earned the victory in his fifth consecutive start. Campbell allowed just one hit, a fifth inning single, during his stellar outing. He struck out five Yellow Jackets as he moved to 5-1 on the mound in 2022. 

Samson led the way offensively with four hits. Meanwhile, LaDuca finished with three and Horvat went 2-for-3 at the dish. 

W&J will look to complete the season series sweep tomorrow (April 11) at Waynesburg. First pitch is slated for a 4 p.m.
