No. 11 UW-Whitewater Finishes Road Sweep

The No. 11 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team moved into a virtual tie for first place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings Saturday with a pair of wins at UW-La Crosse.
 
The Warhawks (19-6 overall, 11-3 WIAC), who are now tied in the loss column with UW-Stevens Point, defeated the Eagles 12-5 in the opener before taking the second game by a 9-6 score.
 
In Game 1, UW-Whitewater took the lead for good in the top of the fifth inning and tallied eight unanswered runs for a commanding eight-run lead through 7 1/2 frames.
 
Centerfielder Zach Campbell (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) smashed his third home run of the series and finished 4-for-5 at the plate with three runs scored and one run batted in. Left fielder Matt Scolan (Downers Grove, Ill./South) posted two hits, two runs scored and four RBIs, while shortstop Bennett Frazer (Hobart, Wis./Oconto) collected three hits, one walk and three RBIs.
 
Third baseman Matt Korman (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) registered two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs and designated hitter Sam Paden (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) knocked in two runs. Right fielder Jacob DeMeyer (Harshaw, Wis./Rhinelander) added one hit, two walks and three runs scored.
 
Pitcher Cam Anfang (Sullivan, Wis./Jefferson) improved to 2-0 with the win, striking out 10 batters over eight innings of work. Cade Berendt (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) finished the game with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
 
The Warhawks started the scoring with three runs in the top of the second inning on Campbell's solo home run, an RBI double by Frazer and a sacrifice fly by Paden. UW-W added another run in the top of the third on Scolan's run-scoring groundout.
 
The Eagles (12-13, 7-9) tied the game with four runs in the bottom of the third before UW-Whitewater retook the lead in the top of the fifth on a two-run double by Korman and a groundout by Scolan.
 
Frazer plated a run with a base hit in the seventh and the Warhawks touched home plate four times in the eighth on a two-run single by Scolan, a base hit to center by Frazer and an RBI groundout by Paden.
 
In Game 2, the Warhawks never trailed after posting five first-inning runs.
 
DeMeyer totaled three hits and three RBIs to lead UW-W. Scoland knocked in three runs and first baseman Nick Paget (New Berlin, Wis./West) finished 2-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs.
 
Hayden Fox (Stockton, Ill./Stockton) pitched 6 1/3 innings with four strikeouts to earn the victory, improving to 2-1 on the season. Berendt tossed the final 2 2/3 frames, holding UWL scoreless on one hit for his first save.
 
The Warhawks host Finlandia (Mich.) for a four-game series April 23-24 at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium. Both doubleheaders begin at 12 p.m.
