Furman Throws Six Strong Innings for R-MC Baseball at H-SC

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Junior Cam Furman (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) allowed one run over six innings with no walks and three strikeouts as the Randolph-Macon baseball team beat Hampden-Sydney 8-1 on Wednesday afternoon to complete a two-game ODAC sweep and extend its win streak to five.

How It Happened:

  • The Yellow Jackets started the scoring in the second. Sophomore Myles Webb (Norfolk, Va./Granby) belted a leadoff double, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Carter Johnson (Southampton, Va./Southampton) to put the visitors up 1-0.
  • R-MC added to its lead in the third. Junior Ethan Iannuzzi (Chesterfield, Va./Cosby) led off with a single to left and advanced to third on a base hit by sophomore Hunter Cole (Norfolk, Va./Granby). A single by Webb plated Iannuzzi and Cole scored on an error to make it 3-0. Webb would touch home on a groundout by junior Brooks Mazey (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) as the advantage grew to 4-0.
  • H-SC got one back in the third before the Yellow Jackets put up another crooked number in the seventh. Iannuzzi had a leadoff base hit and moved to third on a single by Cole. Webb singled to knock in Iannuzzi to make it 5-1. Mazey delivered an RBI single, junior Logan Smith (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) drove in a run with a fielder's choice, and sophomore Grayson Bush (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) added a run-scoring single to push the score to 8-1.

  • R-MC strengthen its hold on second place in the ODAC with an 11-4 conference mark.
  • Furman scattered six hits in raising his record to 3-1.
  • Senior Jacob Smither (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) retired the five batters he faced with one strikeout. Senior Matt Coutts (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) recorded the final out in the eighth. Freshman Sam Slevin (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank Cox) worked a perfect ninth and fanned the final batter of the game looking.
  • The R-MC pitching staff allowed two runs on Tuesday and one on Wednesday. It was the lowest run total in consecutive games for the Yellow Jackets this season.
  • Webb went 3 for 5 with a double, three runs and two RBI.
  • Bush had three hits, a walk and one RBI.
  • Iannuzzi and Cole both had two hits and two runs.
