WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College extended its winning streak to 17 games after a doubleheader sweep Wednesday afternoon over Grove City College. W&J claimed the first game by a 3-2 decision and won the second by a 5-3 margin.

W&J improves to 23-6 overall and 16-0 in PAC play while Grove City falls to 18-10 overall and 9-6 in the league.

Game One - W&J 3, Grove City 2

After retiring Grove City in order in the top of the first, W&J opened the scoring in the bottom of the frame. Tyler Horvat (Irwin, Pa./Penn Trafford) led off with a single and stole second to advance into scoring position. Two batters later Peter Kalinski (Washington, D.C./Saint John's College) slugged his second home run of the season.

The Presidents added a third run, which ended up being the game-deciding run in the third inning. Horvat and Rush produced back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners to start the frame. Horvat then scored on an RBI groundout by Kalinski.

Grove City clawed back with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. A sacrifice fly by Bubba Hamilton made it 3-2 in the sixth. The Wolverines saw the potential game-tying run stranded in scoring position as W&J freshman pitcher Dante DiMatteo (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) escaped with the lead intact.

DiMatteo retired the side in order in the seventh to close down his PAC-leading sixth save.

Jameson Campbell (Painesville, Ohio/Painesville Riverside) won his sixth straight decision. The senior allowed two runs (one earned) in 5.1 innings. Campbell struck out six and walked three.

Horvat paced the offense with two hits and two runs scored. Kalinski finished with all three RBI.

Game Two - W&J 5, Grove City 3

A strong sixth inning by the Presidents would be the difference for W&J in game two. Grove City scored a single run in the first and second innings to build an early lead.

In the fifth, Jason Gregovits (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) was able to rip a single down the right field line to drive home Knox Meier (Tampa, Fla./Berkley Prep), who singled to shortstop and advanced to second off a wild pitch to move into scoring position.  Grove City was able to strand the tying run at third base and held a 2-1 lead after five full innings.

However, the Presidents scored four times on four hits in the bottom of the sixth. Kalinski opened up the fifth with a single to left center before Evan Sante (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) would launch his sixth home run of the season to give W&J a 3-2 lead over the Wolverines. Sante's sixth home run is tied for the most in the PAC this season.

Roman Samson (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) made it back-to-back jacks for the Presidents, as the sophomore followed with a solo home run to make it 4-2 W&J. Samson's home run chased Grove City starting pitcher Shane Cato, who has tossed five strong innings before things unraveled in the sixth.

Jacob LaDuca (Clarence, N.Y./Canisius), who doubled after the pitching change, scored the final run of the game on a sac fly by Knox Meier (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep).

Grove City made things interesting in the ninth against DiMatteo, who was on for his second save opportunity of the evening. Down to its final three outs, the visitors were able to load the bases with no outs. Lucca Baccari singled to open the frame before Jesse Clary worked a walk on a 3-2 pitch. Sam DiStefano was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Following a mound visit from head coach Jeff Mountain, DiMatteo struck out Luke Vittone for the first out. He then got Markus Williams to line into a double play, as DiStefano wandered too far off of first base and was doubled off to end the game.

Horvat recorded his fourth straight win on the mound. He worked 6.2 innings and allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits. Cameron Hayman (Windsor, Calif./Windsor) struck out the final batter in the seventh and Kamden Kautz(Oro Valley, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge) retired the side in order in the eighth. The pair of saves pushed DiMatteo's season total to seven.

Kalinski and Horvat recorded multi-hit games for the Presidents in game two.

W&J is scheduled to travel to Saint Vincent on Thursday, April 21. The second place Bearcats carry a 14-game winning streak into the contest. First pitch at Bearcat Ballfield at 4 p.m.
