STEUBENVILLE, Ohio -- The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team slugged seven home runs as they swept Franciscan University of Steubenville Saturday in a Presidents' Athletic Conference road doubleheader.

W&J used a seven-run fourth inning to take game one by a 10-1 score. The Presidents then used a 22-hit attack to earn the sweep with an 18-13 game two win.

Game One - W&J 10, Franciscan 1

Franciscan held a 1-0 lead after an inning in game one. However, W&J evened the score in the third on a sac fly by Logan Scheider (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny). The Presidents then slugged four home runs during a seven-run fourth inning. Roman Samson (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep), Scheider, Peter Kalinski (Washington, D.C./Saint John's College) and Evan Sante (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) all went deep in the decisive inning.

The Presidents added solo runs in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively. Tyler Horvat (Irwin, Pa./Penn Trafford) and Nate Rush (Wheeling, W.Va./The Linsly School) hit RBI doubles to give W&J a 10-1 advantage.

That was plenty of support for junior pitcher Shane Fox (Valencia, Pa./Mars Area). Fox picked up his third victory by allowing just one run over four strong innings.

Ryan Rametta (Leechburg, Pa./Kiski Area) and Julian Elizondo (Manassas, Va. / Osbourn) combined to toss three shutouts innings in relief.

Horvat finished with three hits while Sante and Nolan Lutz (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) recorded two each.

Game Two - W&J 18, Franciscan 13

The two teams combined to score 31 runs and post 32 hits in the nightcap. W&J jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings and never looked back in the win.

Sante accounted for five RBI over the first two innings. His three-run home run in the first followed a RBI double by Kalinski. The Sante home run made it 4-0 W&J. Sante then hit a two-run double in the second inning.

W&J stretched its lead to 8-2 when Samson hit a two-run double in the fourth.

In the sixth inning, Scheider hit his second home run of the day. With its lead trimmed to two runs, Scheider crushed a three-run home run of the left center field fence to make it 11-6 W&J.

Horvat tallied an RBI double in the sixth and added an RBI triple in the seventh to strengthen the W&J lead to 15-6.

Nate Hess (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth to account for the Presidents' final run of the day.

Horvat and Scheider led W&J with four-hit efforts in the game two victory. Lutz, Rush and Sante added two-hit games as well.

Dante DiMatteo (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) picked up the win for W&J. He is now 2-0 on the season. DiMatteo struck out six Barons.

W&J will aim for the series sweep at Ross Memorial Park on Sunday. The Presidents and Barons will play a single nine-inning game at 1 p.m.
