No. 9 UW-Whitewater Extends Win Streak to Ten

The No. 9 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team took sole possession of first place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings Tuesday thanks to a pair of wins against No. 15 UW-Stevens Point at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium.

 

The Warhawks (25-6 overall, 17-3 WIAC) topped the Pointers 4-1 in the first game before closing the day with a 9-1 triumph in the doubleheader finale.

 

In Game 1, starting pitcher Westin Muir allowed one unearned run over eight innings, striking out five to improve to 7-1 on the season. Kade Lancour pitched around a leadoff double in the ninth for his first save of the year.

 

Neither team touched home plate until the bottom of the fifth inning. After third baseman Matt Korman doubled to right field with two outs, catcher Ryan Norton brought him in with an RBI single to left center to give UW-W a 1-0 advantage.

 

UW-Whitewater doubled its advantage in the sixth on an infield single by first baseman Nick Paget.

 

UW-Stevens Point (24-6, 15-5) cut its deficit to one in the top of the eighth on a sacrifice fly before the Warhawks responded with two in the bottom of the frame on a solo homer by second baseman Sam Vomhof and a run-scoring base hit to center by left fielder Matt Scolan.

 

Vomhof, Paget, Norton and shortstop Bennett Frazer each recorded two hits to lead the offense. Korman reached base twice with one hit and one walk.

 

In the second game, the Warhawks scored five runs in the opening inning and didn't look back, finishing the game with 14 hits.

 

Cade Berendt struck out seven batters over seven innings to move to 5-0 on the year. Cam Anfang tossed two scoreless innings in relief, striking out five during the outing.

 

Korman registered three hits, including a three-run homer in the first, and totaled two runs scored and four RBIs. Centerfielder Zach Campbell finished with two hits, two runs scored and one RBI and right fielder Jacob DeMeyer contributed two hits, one run scored and one RBI.

 

Paget collected two hits and two runs scored, Vomhof had two hits and one run scored and Frazer added a pair of hits. Norton and designated hitter Sam Paden drove in one run apiece.

 

UW-Whitewater hosts UW-Stout Saturday for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. for Alumni Day at Miller Stadium.
