Wolves’ Season Closes at Fisher

PITTSFORD, N.Y. — The 2022 season for the Keuka College Baseball team came to a close on Sunday as the Wolves were swept in a doubleheader at St. John Fisher College.

Keuka finished the season with a 15-19-1 record, going 7-12-1 in Empire 8 play. The Wolves finished tied for fourth in the conference standings but missed out on the postseason due to head-to-head tiebreakers.

The Wolves had a chance off the bat in the top of the first. Matt Vaccaro (Fayetteville, N.Y. / Fayetteville-Manlius) singled and Nick Brown (Liverpool, N.Y. / Liverpool) followed with a walk, but the Wolves were not able to plate a run. St. John Fisher would score a run in the bottom of the inning.

Keuka College again had a chance in the second. Jimmy Griffin (Syracuse, N.Y. / East Syracuse-Minoa) led off with a single. Devyn Scheidt (Brockport, N.Y. / Brockport) was hit by a pitch. Later with one out, a single by RJ Murphy (Syracuse, N.Y. / West Genesee) loaded the bases but they would all be left stranded. The Cardinals got a two-out single in the bottom of the second to score a pair and increase their lead to 3-0.

The hosts took control of the game in the third with four runs. St. John Fisher added a run in the sixth to defeat the Wolves 8-0.

Lead Wolves: Both Matt Vaccaro and RJ Murphy had a pair of hits for Keuka College in game one.

The Cardinals jumped out to a 5-0 lead in game two as the Wolves only managed one hit in the opening three innings.

Keuka College would get on the board in the fourth. Nick Brown led off with a single and Josh Tryon (Elmira, N.Y. / Thomas A. Edison) followed with a walk. A bunt single by Samuel O'Neil (Macedon, N.Y. / Ruben A. Cirillo) loaded the bases with no outs. The Wolves would get two runs on the next play on a throwing error. O'Neil attempted to score from first on the error but was thrown out at home. The next two batters were retired with the score 5-2.

St. John Fisher College got those runs back in a hurry as the Cardinals scored five in the bottom of the fourth to push their lead to 10-2. Keuka would stay in the game with four runs in the fifth. Donald Nemeth (Guilderland, N.Y. / Guilderland) had a pinch-hit RBI single. Nick Brown then had an RBI single. In total, the Wolves had five straight hits to start the inning, loading the bases with two runs in and no outs. On the next play, Fisher attempted to turn a double play but threw the ball away after the first out. One run came home on the play and another on the error as the Wolves cut the lead to 10-6.

However, St. John Fisher responded quickly again. The Cardinals matched Keuka with four runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. St. John Fisher then added two more runs in the seventh to end the game 16-6.

Lead Wolf: Senior Nick Brown had a solid effort in his final game. Brown had a pair of hits, drove in a run, and scored two for Keuka.

  • Keuka College remains in search of its first win over St. John Fisher since 2003. The Cardinals have won 24 straight over the Wolves
  • The 2022 team had one of the best offenses in program history. The Wolves finished with 195 runs (7th) on 310 hits (7th) with 154 (t8th) runs driven in. Keuka had the second-most doubles with 69 and hit batters with 42
  • The pitching staff punched out 205 batters, the second-most in program history. They were led by Spencer Brown (Feura Bush, N.Y. / Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk). Brown started game one for the Wolves on Sunday and added four strikeouts to his total. He extended his single-season record to 58 and also cracked the career top ten with 80
  • Nick Brown turned free bases into runs in 2022. The senior finished the year with 10 hit by pitches (t3rd) and 21 walks (t7th). He ended the year with 37 runs scored, second-most ever in a season at Keuka College
