Holderbach leads #1 Marietta over Hanover 13-0

MARIETTA, Ohio — No. 1 ranked Marietta College closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 13-0 victory over Hanover College Sunday (May 1) afternoon at Pioneer Park. The Etta Express, winners of 21 straight games, improves to 35-3 on the season. Hanover falls to 16-18 overall.

Marietta scored nine runs, all with two outs, in the bottom of the first inning. Logan Vietmeier plated the first run of the game with an RBI double down the left field line. Drew Holderbach, Alex Richter and Ben Kaplin each had RBI singles, while Turner Hill drove in two with a base hit and Damian Yenzi delivered the big blow with a three-run home run to left.

Trent Castle smacked an RBI single in the second and Holderbach added a run-scoring double in the third extending the Pioneer lead to 11-0.

Marietta scored one in the sixth on a sac fly from Wilkinson and added one more in the eighth on a pinch hit single from Ty Davis making it 13-0.

Brett Carson (6-1) got the win after tossing five shutout innings. He allowed five hits, walked two and struck out seven. Zach Marzetz worked two innings allowing three hits and striking out one. Forrest Havanis and Kail Hill each threw one inning.

Charlie Joyce (3-3) started and took the loss for Hanover. He was charged with nine runs, all earned, on seven hits with one walk and no strikeouts. Chris Hautman worked four innings and allowed two runs on six hits. Three other Panthers saw action on the mound.

Holderbach finished 4-for-4 with a double, three runs scored and two RBI to lead the Pioneer attack. Zach Boyd had three hits, including a pair of doubles. Hill and Yenzi had two hits each. Yenzi hit his team-leading tenth home run and picked up three RBI giving him a team best 52 on the season.

Marietta finishes the regular season on Friday (May 6) when the Pioneers host Otterbein University for an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader. Game one is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m.
